Cops, security use paintball and rubber bullets against UKZN students

Durban – Police and security guards fired paintball and rubber bullets at protesting students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Pietermaritzburg campus on Wednesday.

Several students were arrested for "carrying dangerous weapons" while trying to disrupt lectures, said a student who was part of the protest.

This was the third day that the academic programme on the campus had been disrupted due to protests ahead of Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande’s announcement on fee increases for next year. He was expected to do so before the end of the month.

University of KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said on Tuesday night that lectures on the campus were expected to continue on Wednesday.

Teaching and learning continued at UKZN’s Howard College, Westville, Edgewood, and Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine campuses.

UKZN and police could not immediately be reached for comment on Wednesday.

They should just be glad our police is willing to use non lethal means to disperse a crowd. If this was China the protestors would have been executed.

Thinking that rubber bullets and heavy handedness just might have spared UJ's auditorium.

Have to come down on these guys like a hammer wielding ****storm so they think twice about acting like wild animals the next time.
 
Student leaders fail to show for meeting with UKZN management

Earlier today, students at the campus violently demonstrated over issues including financial aid and possible fee increases for 2017.



The university's Lesiba Seshoka says an urgent meeting was then called, but student representatives failed to attend - instead demanding the release of those arrested during the protests.

Ok well then, it was arson but what would rubber bullets have done? They only work if the police and the protesters are there at the same time and since there were no police officers on site...
 
Academic programme suspended at UKZN

Durban - The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) on Thursday suspended the academic programme at all campuses following unrest in Pietermaritzburg and Westville this week.

University spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said classes would resume on Monday next week.

"Management at the University of KwaZulu-Natal has taken a decision to suspend all academic programmes on the five UKZN campuses. The decision to suspend academic activities was taken in consultation with the SRC and in the best interests of the university," he said.

"We urge students to adhere to the university's rules, regulations and applicable protocols in dealing with grievances, complaints and matters of concern. We apologise for any inconvenience caused," he said.

Police and security personnel closely monitored campuses in Durban and Pietermaritzburg after unrest broke out on campuses there on Wednesday.

This follows protest action related to tertiary institution fees across the country on Monday.

Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande on Monday said a decision on university fee increases for 2017 would be made before the end of the month.

Attempts to contact UKZN and the police were unsuccessful at the time of publishing.

UKZN lectures suspended again as talks continue

Durban - Negotiations between the administration and SRC at the University of KwaZulu-Natal continued on Tuesday, while the academic programme was suspended for another full day.

Lectures were halted for most of last week after unrest broke out on campuses in Pietermaritzburg and Westville. SRC deputy president Sduduzo Khoza said that talks were ongoing.

"There has been a mass gathering due to a number of issues, including fee increment, residences and NSFAS online applications at the Pietermaritzburg Campus and Westville Campus," he said.

"As student leadership and management, we decided to suspend academic activities until the negotiations are accomplished, which is to also for the safety of the UKZN community," Khoza added.

He said that the ultimate aim of the SRC was to make sure that students were safe, and "for the management to give solutions to all our grievances".

"We care about the academics of students. It is not in our wishes to allow students not to attend classes, though it is high time the UKZN management takes the students’ leadership seriously," Khoza said.
