This has to be a seriously noob question, but I'll risk the ridicule.......

I have Open Office 2.3 installed on an XP machine at work, the install disk has since disappeared. Is it possible and practical to copy the application from the machine on which it is installed, for installation on another XP machine, or will I have to download the whole thing again? (I have dial-up access here, hence the hesitation to download)

The problem with windows is how programs get strewn all across the filesystem when they are installed (never mind the registry) so while it may be technically possible to copy it without the installer you might find it extremely tedious to find all the disparate parts that you will need.

Check the install directory if there is some type of manifest of what got installed where, that might be a good starting point.

OOo 2.4 (and quite likely the one before) unpacks the downloaded file to a folder on the desktop, unless you specify a different location. The installer and all required files are therein.

yeah it won't be an easy task. i think best to ask someone to get you the latest version 2.4.1 on disk. Eish, prolly takes about 8 hrs downloading 130MB on dial-up? :(

riscbroker, what area are you in: you have a very real chance of someone helping you out with a drive-by drop-off ...don't underestimate the bandwidth of a flash drive! :p

I would not copy the program folder. I would do what he suggests and copy the installation folder. If you have deleted that, then I would download it again, or get one of us to send you the disc.

To clarify: the single file you download unpacks to a folder, usually on the desktop, in which the installer and all required .cab, etc. files are located.

If he's lucky, coz that's normally the first to go on a desktop decluttering mission. :D

Export "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OpenOffice.org" and "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\OpenOffice.org" from the registry (use regedit, locate the key, right-click and select export). Copy the folder in program files over to the over machine, and run the two exported .reg files.

Should work methinks. Might have to create file associations manually though, or search for it in the registry.

There you go, Risc. That works! Just did this with OO2.41. Also copied the nice looking shortcuts back to start menu (from: right-click start button, explore all users, start menu programs).

If you run OO now, it shows the licence agreement and asks for your personal details. That's it. ;)

Thanks guys for the responses.
@Nod - I followed your instructions, copied over the entire folder and have copied and run the 2 .reg files, Windows reports that registry is updated. I assume I still need to link something since I cannot launch the app or select it as the application to open particular files......

You can try a program called PCMover, its supposed to mover over programs from one pc to the other, I haven't used it, just read about it.

What do you get when you try to launch the app?

To associate the files with OOo, simply right-click on the files, select "Open With", select or browse to OOo, and then tick the box to associate the file type with the application. Click "Ok".

To restore the associations and icons used for each type, i used a small app (500KB) called WAssociate. It shows the registry entries for both description and mime type in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT of the extension you select.

So what you do is copy both mime and description reg entries for all OO file types from WAssociate and save them each as separate .reg file then import on other system.

OOo file types:

odb
odf
odg
odm
odp
ods
odt
oxt (openofficeorg.extension)

Open Office is not available as an option when I right click. There is also no entry in Start/All Programs for me to launch the app.

You must browse for soffice.exe.

But if you use the metod above using WAssociate it restores file associations and the default icons of each type.

To get the shortcuts back in your start menu, like i said above, right-click your start button > Explore all users > Start menu > programs - copy Openoffice.org to new PC.

Thanks all for your interest and excellent assistance, I have it sorted now
