Hey guys

I don’t know how many of you guys struggle with people copying files from your computer while you’re busy gaming in a LAN event. Well I’m busy developing a program that can throttle the speed of downloads to suite your connection speed.

My idea is to make it as easy as possible to use, so that anyone with basic computer knowledge can use it.
So for those that want to test it, here’s a link http://www.2shared.com/file/2EQa8rYE/STATIC_Share.html Tell me what you think, and please I’m not a professional programmer so don’t go hard on me

It’s still in beta stage, so there are some bugs. :erm:

Features:
- Throttle traffic with a spike effect every x amount of milliseconds depending on your connection speed.
- Also have Max upload and download slots

Here’s the list of known issues and limitations

Limitations:
- 2 computers with the same computer name will cause sharing problems
- Password protected sharing must be off (If someone can tell me how to switch this off programmatically please message me)
- STATIC share doesn’t use any encryption; do not share any confidential information. STATIC Share makes use of windows share to process some information, but it uses its own technology to send the data.
- STATIC Share is still beta quality, use it on own risk.
- There might be some lag when opening folders and starting downloads
- When you are trying to download a folder or file that doesn’t exist anymore it might just never appear in your download list without giving you an error. It is important to refresh your data on the server when you have changed something on your shared folders
- Slow Wifi and 10Mbps doesn’t work at this stage. It keeps losing connection to the server and restarts the downloads.

Bugs:
- Sometimes when you click on download it tells you the download is completed, just click again on the download then it usually works.
- When several computers are connected to a server and you close and reopen the server it might cause the server to not respond. Best is to close the program on all computers and then start up the server

I’ve only tested this program with 2 - 3 computers, everything should work on a larger network also, but I apologise in advance if it doesn’t work.

It's called QoS? Just shapes the ports needed for gaming so they are given preference. A few routers do this with WiFi.

It looks like a cool project to learn network programming with, but to be honest, these days there is always a DC++ hub server or a torrent tracker on the network. I haven't samba'ed files accross a network in years.

Errr, yeah - DC has a speed limit built into it, and if you are sharing files via Windows you are opening yourself to a world of hurt (read: viruses)

You are not supposed to share via windows - afaik at some lans it's illegal.

Yeah yeah, everything's been done before. But not by the OP. He's going to get experience doing it, and may end up with a nice little project.
