Good evening fellow earthlings,

I am currently putting a build together for a friend of mine. He will be primarily using the computer for video editing in Premiere Pro and After Effects, but then also some gaming.

Currently the build has a Core i5 4690K, 16GB RAM and a GTX 970. I can't decide between getting a Core i7 4790K or 32GB of RAM?

I tried Google but could not find anything helpful really :( Is the hyperthreading of the i7 worth more than extra RAM?

What is your opinion? Thanks!

i7 definitely , the larger cache and 8 threats should come in handy in video editing

Oh yeah get 17 terabytes of RAM, that will really improve performance.

Stop being a chop, 16GB is already overkill for anything anywhere. Get a faster CPU.

I would also Go I7, At the end of the day its more processing Power you need not more memory unless you are working with ridiculous 8k videos or some stuff like that

And a SSD because that would just make all the difference in the world

I would go for an ssd over anything.
The improvements in speed with an ssd alone are noteworthy.

If the focus is on video editing, then definitely look at the Core i7 and 16GB of RAM. In fact, if your friend is willing to drop to the GTX760 and increase the budget just a bit, it might be enough for a Core i7-5820K with a decent X99 motherboard and 16GB of DDR4-2133 RAM.

Edit: In fact, here's a comparison:

Intel Core i7-5820K @ R5472
MSI X99S SLI Plus ATX @ R3315
Crucial Value 4x 4GB DDR4-2133 CL15 @ R3068
MSI Geforce GTX760 Gaming 2GB GDDR5 @ R3137
Total: R14,992

Intel Core i7-4790K @ R4836
ASRock Z97 Extreme 4 ATX @ R2151
Kingston Hyper-X Fury Blue 4x 4GB DDR3-2133 CL10 @ R2132
EVGA Geforce GTX 970 Superclocked ACX 4GB GDDR5 @ R5266
Total: R14,385

Dropping to a Core i5-4670K does shave off about R1500 from this total, but the extra threads do benefit workloads like video encoding.

Video editing uses a lot of RAM.

Rather get the i7 and add more RAM later if required. The hyper-threading will be a better performance boost and will allow you to just add more RAM later, rather than having to replace your processor for better specs.

Here is a good video with benchmarks which should help:

get the i7

and later upgrade the ram, when he see his ram usage get to 70-80% all the time
also what speed ram does he have atm?

Thank for all the replies guys!! I will then get the i7 and keep the 16GB RAM. Talking about SSD's. I am also thinking of getting a separate SSD in addition to the main 240GB one, which will be a 64GB one just for the video editing cache. Overkill maybe?

Current build specs:

CPU- Core i7-4790K
RAM - 16GB Kingston HyperX Fury
MOBO - MSI Z97S Krait Edition
SSD - OCZ Arc 100 240GB
HDD - 1TB WD Caviar Blue
GPU - EVGA GTX970
CPU COOLER - Corsair h105

Lots of people use a second SSD as a scratch pad rather than a RAM drive, its just much easier to configure. Writes will be on the slower side at around 150MB/s, but read speeds will be in the 300-450MB/s range depending on the drive you use. 128GB drives are also getting much cheaper, so a OCZ Arc 100 would be a good choice.
