Hey guys, I have a 2003 corolla 160i, got it in 2004 with 45000 on the clock and its now on 173000. All that I had to do was normal wear and tare and replaced the clutch. The car has had all the services and it runs perfectly.

I am now thinking about when it will start giving me problems and the costs therein. I know bits and bobs about cars and I am concerned about when the big problems begin like the gearbox and engine. Do you all think its about time to trade in on a newer vehicle or will the 2 grand plus not substantiate the necessity of buying something new? I drive quite a bit for work and cannot afford to be without a car.

Being Japanese, probably not in a while. Unless you drive like a complete animal, I don't think that you have anything to worry about in terms of major failures.

Well if there is no known problems that could possibly crop up like with certain other vehicles, I am most certain just to happily put that extra 2k a month into a fixed deposit and reap the interest later on :)

My mother drives my old 1995 160i RS Conquest. It has 480k km on the clock and it now needs a new clutch. Again. Toyotas NEVER die. Oh, yes my dad also drove it into a 18 wheeler when it was only 3 months old.

recently it became known that all corollas fail on 173013.627 km's. please sell before you reach this number :P

I had a 2001 1.6 GLE corolla and it was very economical. I had it from 2006 (115 000km) to 2010 (285 000km). I would say about 50 000km was on gravel roads. I served it regularly & changed brakes when required. Earlier this year I replaced 1 CV joint. No other problems.

I put in a performance branch and a freeflow exhaust system and drove the car like I stole it most days. No clutch or gearbox problems.

Corollas are mighty reliable, even if driven enthusiastically.
I drove a 97 1.6GLE a while back and after 9 years and 110000kms it was still going strong. That when i sold it... i miss it :(

I had a 1995 Corolla (when it was still a nice shape), I sold it when it had 250 000 on the clock, with no problems at all, 4 years ago. And it is still going strong, I know the guy who drive it now. But as with all cars, if you look after it it will look after you.

It will develop problems when you can least afford to have them...

That is the only solid timeframe anyone can give you.
