Well, as the title reads, We are sitting with a situation there the OST file is corrupt (or rather cannot be opened) and the mail-store is also dead, is there any free way of converting the OST to a PST?

Usually all you need to do is rename the OST and then try launch the mailbox again. Outlook should create a new one. Rename instead of delete so that if this doesn't work youre back at square one :) Not sure what a dead mailstore is though, and i have no clue how microsoft creates OST

I haven't seen any free tools that will do that.

Where are you're backups?

What's wrong with the store?

Renaming wont work, a OST is encrypted unlike a PST.
What i have tried was running the pst recovery tool you get with office, but this also failed, did manage to find a "sysTool OST recovery" which has done the trick :-)

PS, a mailstore is where the actual mailbox is stored on the server, a OST is a local container for the mailbox.

You are right, there is no free program that can do this, have searched high and dry.

Server support only told me the mail store is dead, there is no backup.

OST file is replica of Exchange server mailbox and is created in MS Outlook with Cached Mode Enabled. OST can be opened or accessed with the same Outlook profile & Exchange mailbox . If the Information Store or Exchange mailbox is dead then OST file become orphaned (which cannot be accessed else where).

Use any external ost file conversion product to access OST file data without Exchange server (this is the only possible way). It's also true that no Free stuff is available till now to do this job.

Few months back, in situation our organization adopted a reasonably-priced & good quality ost converter product. It converted ost file into pst file format, keeping the entire data intact.

You can find its details at: http://www.pcvita.com/ost-converter.html

it worked very well for us!! :)

Try Outlook Recovery Toolbox. It's a paid software.
I had some success recovering email from a broken OST file and exported the mail into a new PST file which I created.
