Corrupt SD Card

I tried accessing some of my recordings on my S3 SD card yesterday and couldn't find any. When I explored the contents of the SD Card, the "sounds" folder had some funnny characters (upside down question marks, letters etc).
What could've happened and can I get my data back?

Static electricity happened...
I had a similar issue.. ran a utility in Linux to fix it (google for the name)... lost 2 files (couldn't recover them)
The two 512 byte pages were marked as bad.. appears the memory cells are kaput.
