Corsa bakkie overheating

I had a Toyota Hilux on which I blew the head gasket, did the whole skim, replace etc, still drove over 150 000km before I sold it. If a decent job is done then no problems, if a half assed job is done then you will have major problems.

If the head is fine or even if they skim it, it will be fine. A head gasket usually lets go because of overheating (in my opinion). So it might be worth checking things like the thermostat/radiator/pipes/etc.

The car might do another 200k km before it acts up again. It is a bit of a gamble, but if the mechanic does a proper job, there is nothing to worry about.

Agreed. In my experience, cooling problems happen in threes; one problem causes another two. Check waterpump, thermostat, and hoses as well.

I also did the skim thing on my Corolla when I replaced my valve stem seals. Car still is going fine (30k+ kms after the overhaul).

I did the job myself, except for the skimming and stem seal replacement part, for that I took it in to a mechanical workshop which specializes in such things.

No need to sell the car after a blown head gasket. In fact, it should run like new again. Also, This level of repair is a good opportunity to check other things inside the engine, particularly worn piston rings which might be causing blue smoke from the exhaust. Also, have them look at the timing chain/belt while everything is open. Replacing this as a precaution may prevent a very expensive repair in the future and will definitely give peace of mind to anyone who may want to buy the car down the line.

Thanks I thought as much, we've just got back from the mechanic and he says it is possible that he may only need to skim the head gasket but as you know, he will only be able to tell once he's opened it up. I'm not worried I'm sure they'll do a good job.

Thank you I definitely think I want to keep the bakkie, I use it for business and it's so comfortable and nice to drive.

Thanks very much for that, the mechanic said he is going to replace the waterpump and the hoses. Will just make sure about the thermostat that they check it. Thank you

Oh I did that, tried being the one towed once before and didn't like it at all!! My husband said I did quite well this time although I absoloutely hate it, trying to keep the tension on the rope and changing gears is always a problem at least it wasn't too far, and to top it all, I get to a robot and the guy in the car next to me asks what's wrong??? - stupid question or what? I said petrol too expensive we cant afford to run both vehicles??
I've heard about putting the heater on but wasn't sure why? Now it makes a lot of sense thank you.

I also think so, it only has 40 000 km on so its not that its old and I love it, such an easy comfortable ride.

I'd get rid of it real fast then. I love Opels but if your car (no matter what the make) has this kind of problems at that low milage then something is not right. Did you buy it new?

Personally i've found that once a car has started having overheating problems it's usually going to continue to give you trouble.

Depends on the cause of the overheating problems and how its fixed. I have had my car overheat twice times and not get to normal temperature once. Each time there was a pretty straight forward reason for it and the fix that was made lasted.

Get the mech to pressure test the cylinder head. Overheating can cause a hairline crack.

If that's the case your gasket will blow again.

I have had a thermostat failure on 2000kms...

Golf overheated. Was a loose terminal at the back of the fan. Took ages to find the little bastard.

Also if the engine is hot don't just dump cold water into the system. You could crack/warp the engine block that way.
