For the passed three days I have been battling with gear shifting. The gears are hard to get in when the engine is on. Everything is smooth when off. I sometimes have to select gear then start engine. Car does not jump with the clutch down.
No grinding noise when I force into gear, just feel an obstruction ( like poorly adjusted cable).
Drained oil and put new - no change.
Adjusted cable many turns - no change,
I opened the bell housing inspection hole ( F13). When I spin wheel in neutral and looking at the clutch kit I can hear "jingle "sound like clutch disc springs. When I get deeper under the car I think I hear sound from spider/spiral gears at drive shaft entry.
I want to know if my problem is with the gear box or clutch kit.
Clutch not slipping. All gears are equally difficult to get into. Torque feels ok.

Have you consulted with a gearbox specialist?

Gear getting in and well with the car off and you can drive okay with it? Does not sound like a gearbox, but that is only based on the gears you can select with the car off like reverse and first.

How is the cable adjustment looking like and the pedal in comparison? For a new clutch and a new cable that's not stretched the adjustment should be at the beginning of the bolt with all the threads visible after the knob or at least a few threads remaining.

Post a picture of the cable adjustment bolt.

All gears are perfect when off. Have even tested by releasing the clutch with them on and they engage and start movement. I even start with gear 2 on flat or sloping ground to avoid gear battle.
Clutch cable adjustment is at halfway along the bolt and clutch pedal about the brake pedal height. I have adjusted the cable to have the pedal well above the brake and no change.

Clutch not releasing enough to disengage gearbox from flywheel.
Thanks for the input. I was thinking that if the clutch was not disengaging, the car will jump when I start it with 1 gear engaged even with clutch pedal depressed...?

Did the problem just appear out of nowhere or we're you doing some work on the car?
It started when I was stuck in traffic and was clutching every 5seconds, also the bakkie had a load and mainly generally up a mild hill road ( from Fourways to Bryanston)

I guess its gear box down... I just drove to pick up my tools. I have also noticed that after putting it into gear, its quite difficult to take it out. Feels locked in. I have a LUk old set I took out when I was having a problem with the spining sound from the release bearing. I will change the disc. I suspect that the disc springs are catching on flywheel bolts. This disc was a cheap after market one. There should be a change after this excercise. Should be done by 10.00a.m . Will give a feedback and pics.

After market clutch disc broke a spring. Thus why I have been hearing these jingles and obstruction. Sometimes it would select perfectly depending maybe on piece location but of late, it has been a battle to select any gear...

Thanks for the input.
*** Will post update on 1.4 head on 1.6 block on my previous thread.

Bad Luck with the spring

Maybe while you are there change the bearings, but don't get from Auto Parts stores, go to a bearing distributor like BMG or bearing corp, give them your old ones and ask for A brand replacements, it'll be brands like SKF, NSK, IKO, FAG, etc etc.

Then you can be sure the bearings will outlast the car going forward.

And it won't be much more expensive than the India China specials all things considered.

Now that you mention it, I was spining the release bearing while still in its fork to check if it was noisy as it looked quite in good shape. While I tried to spin it this time holding its neck, the top part lifted off like a hamburger. Funny enough, the bearing had been smooth running and no sound on spining. Do they seperate like that or what? It could not stick back hence had to replace it also.

No they aren't supposed to come apart, the casing is designed and pressed in such a way as to hold the outer ring in place with the sleeve.

If yours just fell apart, it must be rubbish, take it to where you bought it and throw it at the salesman.

It'll still work if you reassemble it and push it back in, but when you are not on the clutch it can come apart and send the balls and bits of cage to go fsck up the rest of your clutch.

REMEMBER to lightly grease the inside sleeve and the two contact points when you reassemble.

Also check this mounting bracket for any cracks, however small - chances are it is this culprit that leads to further damage:

And if you have a cable operated clutch, check the plastic bracket where the cable lug hooks into, otherwise it'll swivel the lug causing the cable to break in a couple of months

I went through 4 before I figured that out.
