Hi all need some advice my corsa lite is making a jerking movement when I accelerate (or so it seems to me) also when I idle the needle showing the revs keeps dropping just below 1 and then returns again... latest development is it sounds like its back firing but out the drivers side of the car somewhere... (once again per so it seems to me as I know just about 0 about cars). Is it still safe to drive for a bit? Or am I seriously risking worse damage? Some one has suggested a blown gasket?

Could be a few reasons. As a quick fix check all the piping around the intake and take out the idle control valve and clean it with carb cleaner then go from there.

Check your bougi cables and spark plugs

Chances are its electric. Check and replace your bougi cables and spark plugs. Could also be your coil pack. Thats usually the biggest reason for your car to misfire as they wear out over time 3 years lifespan really.

Ive had that happen to me where the first cylinder cable went faulty and became seriously jerky and sometimes doesnt want to go. Replaced the cables and back to normal.

Had the revving issue on my Corsa bakkie - It was the Fuel injection Harness being loose or something. Quick fix. This also caused slight lag on acceleration.

Same thing happened on my OPC. At 120-130km it would jerk and twitch. But as soon as I changed to 2nd gear - problem went away.

What Corelli said. Coil pack and/or HT leads would be my first suggestion too.

Thanks for the quick replies my last service was in December... I am travling about 200km today and back on sunday then will take it in somewhere on monday... hope it will be ok till then

The feul pomp is a common problem with corsa lites. If you take it to a place they'll check the feul pressure.

Then spark plugs can be ruled out, only if they were indeed replaced when the service was done, your symptoms matches the ones I had before the coil stopped working.

Travelling such kilometres is not recommended. Coil pack was about R500 or so when I bought mine at Goldwagen about two or three years ago, if you really want to take your chances maybe replace that and see how it goes, you are probably going to need one in future if you've never replaced it so it wont be a waste.

Also recommends to change the HT leads while at it.

Possibly the head gasket. Ive got a 2006 Corsa 1.4 Gamma that is close to 300 000km. It started having a flat spot jerking thing as well as the occasional backfire mostly when slowing down and accelerating again.

Is your car using water? Mine would be erratic with the water level. Then when i took the airpipe off at the intake manifold it was full off a creamy coloured gunk. Tell tale sign that there is water in the oil.

Long story short. Was a leaking head gasket. Just make sure you skim the head if you do replace the head gasket and use new head bolts (stretch bolts) as well. Cheaper at Goldwagen than from Opel.

Check the coilpack , exact same symptoms on my brothers corsa earlier this month . replaced sparkplug , leads and fuel pump. Ended up being the coilpack

I have the same problem with my corsa lite, the mechanic changed the coil pack and leads but its still was making the same thing, and i took it back to him and how he said he will replace thermostat + housing and also skimme the head, gusket and retaining bolts. Now he says that the parts and the engineer to skimme will cost R3800 keep in mind that I paid him R2000 for the coil pack leads when the problem remained. Want to does this sound right or is these prices inflated?

Can't see how the jerking has anything to do with the head gasket?

Check your injectors. Hold a screwdriver to the injector inlet and listen closely for a tapping sound.

Ask him for the original HT leads. I would first go back to this.

You need to ditch this mechanic.

Now I even question whether the coil pack was ever changed, your mechanic first changed the coil pack and the leads, you paid R2000, now he wants to change the thermostat and skim the head, and you have to pay R3800, what if the problem is not fixed? I know he is going to tell you that the entire engine needs to be changed.

Yip, scamanic.
