Hi

With this Nexus comp, me like presume many others scanned MyBB for places to post and I discovered there I allot more on the forum that I thought. So I am throwing this out there to see what happens, I red blogs, spoken to dr’s ,, believe me I tried it all, so here goes.

I been on cortisone for the best part of ten years, and that stuff is not very kind to the body. First of all it eats the calcium in your body and then it kills that little man that tells you, you had enough to eat.

Lucky I realized fast so I stick with small portions to eat. But by that time I had gained about 40kg. I am not on cortisone any more so I bought a recumbent exercise bike (I am disabled so I can’t go for a run)
I drink a lot of water but still the weight stays.

If anyone out there have some tips please share

The question is also have you replaced the cortisone with any other medications that may have similar side effects?
You don't specify your disability, are you able to swim or do any other form of exercise - maybe you just need to give it some time for the weight to start dropping?

You need to eat well and exercise, you have 40kg's to get off.

Nothing but exercise and diet is going to help you. Take it month by month, eat well and exercise. Sadly there is no magic cure for 40kg's of fat.

Fresh fruit, veggies are an absolute must. No fruit juice.

Cortisone usually makes you gain loads of water weight, eat a banana everyday for breakfast or anything with potassium in it and cut your sodium intake, you might find 10kg's of the 40 is water but sadly you have a long journey ahead of you.

Hi live666

As i said in another thread i as diagnosed with Behcets syndrome, it is a auto immune disease so i was on cortisone to keep my immune system under control.

My neurologist put me on Azathioprine and took me of the cortisone, so no the new meds does not cause weight gain.
Disability .. i had four strokes and coupled with the Behcets which took my balance. My legs dont work so well

Hello Kimbo. I'm sorry to hear about your syndrome. You mention you eat small portions. What do they consist of? Let's have a look what your daily routine with regards to eating looks like atm, and then take it from there. How many times do you eat, what do you eat etc.

Hi Nicci

Well morning start with weatbix or some outs or so,
in our house we have our cooked meal for lunch,
between breakfast and lunch i normally have some fruit or so. The cortisone weakened my teeth and gums so much that apples and so are a big no no
In the evening it is normally two slices of bread with some jam. I must coves i drink allot of coffee. Black thou if that is a plus

Hello :)

Ok, you are off to a good start. Eating regularly during the day is a must, since it helps with improving your metabolism, which is a good thing.

For breakfast, try Kellogs Special K, or Weetbix is also good. Eat this with yoghurt of low fat milk. Use honey instead of sugar.
For fruit, I would not eat to much of it, as it also already contains sugar, so I would suggest a banana, which has a lot of potassium in. Cranberries with cereal is also very good.

Cooked meal for lunch is fine, as long as it contains a protein, vegetables and a little bit of starch. I would actually cut out on the starch for now, but not completely because I see you eat bread for dinner, so your body might crave this. Rather have something like steamed chicken and veg, grilled meat and veg and salad.

For dinner, do not eat the bread and jam. That is your big problem right there, because you are not very active, so when you eat that starchy sugary food at night, its very bad for you. I suggest perhaps having a salad instead, and if you have to have bread with it, then wholewheat bread, not white.

Drink lots of water, this helps with bad toxins in the body. Also don't put too much salt in your food, as this causes further water retention. If you eat healthy, non fried food, and keep away from sugar and starches, you will already see a big improvement, without having to excersise. When you loose a bit of weight, I am sure it will be easier also for you to get around and perhaps walk short distances to get started.

Good luck, its not easy, but with willpower great things can be accomplished :)

How long have you been off it? It might take a while to be metabolised completely and no more traces of it left in your body? Also, how old are you? Unfortunately it is a fact that as you get older...it gets a whole lot easier to put on weight...and a whole damn lot more difficult to get rid of it as your metabolism starts to slow down.

Coffee itself is not so bad, infact it should help you feel less hungry if anything, and even milk with it is not so bad, but how much sugar do you drink with it? Work that down to 1 teaspoon, then replace sugar with honey instead. Honey, while it contain natural sugar (which is better anyways) it also contains natural elements that break down the sugar.

How much sugar do you add to your oats or wheetbix? If possible replace wheetbix completely with oats, and don;t add too much sugar. I add 0 sugar to mine, but adding butter (not margerine) is not so bad.

Bananas and apples are some of the best fruit you can eat, but if you can't eat apples (they take more energy to break down than they put in your system), bananas is the best, it contains LOADS of potassium, more than anything else natural.

Bread, and anything else that is processed, is generally not so good for you, you would be better off looking for something else to eat. I personally stay away from bread and other processed food, which includes most breakfast meals. Oats is the only good breakfast cereal that I personally know off, but I am sure you can find other sources on the net for that.

It comes down to exactly what you eat, weight is 90% what you eat and drink, and 10% exercise. Reason for that is, while exercise reduce weight, it doesn't do that much, but if you do like strength training, you can keep the same weight, but exchange fat for muscle, called body re-composition.

ps. Usually drinks like sodas, is 60% of the fast most people have, next is most other stuff, including fruit juice ect. Drinking water exclusively for 3 months should give you close to 5kgs in those 3 months, if not more. I have a friend who stopped drinking alcohol and sodas, switching to water, who lost 8kgs in 4 months. We were both already on a fairly good diet however.

Tx Nicci

I will put this to use and see what happens.

Nice evening for you and tx again for you advice

Hi Tinuva

I am not a big fan of sugar in cereal, so i just have like half a teaspoon over that.
Tx for the water tip, i do not drink fizzy drinks and dont drink alcohol at all. so i will cut the coffee and replace with water
exercise .. like i said i have a recumbent exercise bike

Ja no after two years that really should not be a issue. 37 is still young...but you will definitely have to work harder to loose the weight compared with a 20 year old man. Will just now be a question of eating the right things and exercising. If you can afford it...perhaps go see a personal trainer at one of the gyms and ask him/her to work out a eating plan for you and also work out a work out program for you that you can do with your dissabilites. Hopefull this will help you get the weight down more quickly? If you can...simming is great excersice also and most good gyms will have a decent size pool where you can do laps.

Basically all the diet aspects have already been covered thus far.

The good news, azopress will not cause weight gain, the bad news it will hit your immune system very hard. I suggest you be cautious because in SA someone's cough can be a TB indueced cough so take the best most realistic precautions you can.

The bad news is that corticosteroids has side effects in the long run, that weight is something that will take hard work and diligence to remove. You should also have a lot of chest fat (are you a guy?) which will probably be the hardest thing to lose. It will take months maybe years to restore your body depending on how long you were on the steroids and what dose, but there isnt any quick fixes. I also wouldnt recommend any weight loss drugs. If you a guy DO NOT use testosterone (or testosterone boosting supplements) to try and get rid of the chest fat (steroid indueced gynacomastia).

Sucks to have an autoimmune disease :( I have vitiligo. The treatments are harsh for any autoimmune disease. All I can say is endure and do the best you can.

Hows your memory doing? with the disease and long term corticosteroid treatment it must have taken quite a knock

Hi RiaX

Long term memory is very good. Short term memory is shot. So i force myself to transever emportant things to my long term memory.
I am a big believer not to take grugs to lose weight and for a long time i could not believe that medication can make you fat but here i am lol
Tx for all the help from ppl i really appreciate it.
If you see a fat person in the street give them a break, not all fat ppl over eat to get that way
