RTRS-S.AFRICA'S LABOUR FEDERATION COSATU BACKS UNION CALL FOR STRIKES TO PRESS FOR LOWER INTEREST RATES

RTRS-S.AFRICA'S COSATU SAYS WANTS CHANGE OF LEADERSHIP AT CENTRAL BANK

Vavi and Cosatu must stay away from economic matters
The effervescent Cosatu general secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi, stood before workers on Wednesday demanding the zero-VAT rating of foods and fuels.

It was a glorious piece of populist speech-making. A pity, though, that four of the five consumables Vavi was ranting about are already zero-rated.

Manual was also widely praised for not spending a lot of money during the boom times and instead Manual saved a bit of money for us, while Vavi on the other hand wanted Manual to have a deficit during the boom times. Vavi and Cosatu must just concentrate on ensuring the rights of workers, that's it, telling Mboweni and Manual what to do will not help South Africans in the long run.

Right so their logic is that in order to improve economic conditions in this country they must protest and lower productivity.

What a bunch of buffoons.

But they insist Tito must come out an accept their memorandum. Honestly, they have little right to make demands like this on the Reserve Bank or its governor.

I am all for lowering the interest rate to a reasonable rate, especially if the banks won't do so. However, I will side with Mboweni on this one because Cosatu's actions are purely irresponsible.
