Could Artificial Intelligence create/develop software on it's own?

I think AI still won't be as creative as the human mind... Like I think it would be able to code a lot of stuff, but unlikely to come up with new ideas... If it does, we're firetrucked... unless, you own the robot, then it can work in your advantage...

Isn't this the theory behind singularity?

Eventually AI will learn faster than we can and then start creating its own stuff which we will be unable to understand.

As the title says.

Would AI be capable of this?

I always think of the copy or cut and paste feature of an Operating System.
It is essentially copying a file, folder or application to create a replica of it on storage.

Could something similar to this copy process be utilized to not just replicate, but develop it's own code and software?

Just a random thought for the day :)

A true AI would likely just be millions of algorithms with a massive data storage system. Thing is it would build all those algorithms itself and continually improving on itself without outside intervention. Two questions come to mind:

What is an AI?
What would be the starting point of a pure AI aka It's "singularity"?

I wonder if a more complex phenomena like Conways 'Life' might emerge in the playing field of large data sets & instructions: Stable patterns worlds more complex than Gliders. These patterns might then behave in ways that are only sensical from the viewpoint of the information itself - to us they might seem nonsensical or invisible. These patterns aren't intentionally constructed, but emerge naturally, remain stable, and get selected for.

This is maybe a sense in which AI/data could develop it's own software.
