I had my DSL self install done a week ago, (6 days from application, could be a record!) and today, on Sunday, a guy calls from Telkom wanting to come and do the install. I say it was done a week ago, self install, he says he can't see the modem on the line, he needs to come to the house and check it. I read another post somewhere here similar to this, it juts got me thinking, what if some poops from Telkom are passing self install details to their *friends* who then attempt to come to your house and clean you out? I told the guy to check again, and to leave me alone, my modem is running fine, he then hung up.

This definately sounds like a scam.

Telkom would NEVER call after 6 days. If you got the call 6 months from now, I would probably say it was telkom, but after 6 days??? Far too efficient for them ;)

Ironically, I have been torrenting like mad from the day it was active, and playing BF2 again, so yeah...

Hi PoiZoNouZ,

When you did your self install, were you notified by Telkom that your line was ready, or going to be ready on a certain date?

I had a similar thing when I applied - A week after I applied for a self install, I was given a installation date about a month ahead. However, I got my router immediately and when I attached it to the line it connected, much to my surprise. It failed the online verify, but support did something, and it worked although it only synced at 320 (too slow for the 512 service I had ordered). Anyway, at least I had connectivty, so I organised my ISP and started using the line. The funny thing was that whenever I spoke to Telkom they told me that they couldn't see my connection. Telkom only officially "installed" my line about two months after the original "installation" date. Only then did I get my proper speeds.

Anyway, the point of all that is perhaps your line isn't really "installed" yet, so perhaps you line hasn't been setup for the speeds that you ordered (see also your other thread about slow upload speeds). Did you do the online "verify" and did it pass? Call support at 0800375375 and ask them if they can see if you are connected. You can also call installations at 0800456786 and ask them the status of your installation.

im in the same boat as you :( tomorrow is a monday so il see if they call.

JAS
the only problem i have is that my line is running at perfect speeds and the speed that i ordered. :( i hope youre right

I did the line verify thing, and my line is correct at 384/128. I will call them tomorrow just to be sure.

The sync speeds (down and up) are just the physical speeds that the ADSL modem synchronizes with the DSLAM. Obviously the sync speeds need to be at least as fast as the service speeds that you are paying for. However, Telkom also have some other sort of speed throttling mechanism in place. I have DSL512, and am getting maximum speeds typical of a 512/256 service (about 88%), but my modem is actually syncing at 1152/384.
