Could my ADSL line do this?

Hi Guys

This is my first post -> let's hope it's a success...

I don't know much about the tech side of ADSL, some of you can confuse the hell out of me! So please respond in lamens terms, hehe.

After browsing various ISP websites tonight I came to think of something.

Telkom supplies the 192Kbps Line @ R329 per month.
Web Africa supplies a 10GB capped connection @ R300 per month.

If I were to sign up for those 2 will I really be able to get 10GB a month out of my Line??

According to my understanding Telkom caps the Line.

So, that means that regardless of having a 10GB agreement with an ISP you will still only get 3 or 4GB per month?

Am I correct, or way off? Is this plan of mine viable?

The line itself is not capped, the capping is done at the ISP account level, in other words you are more than capable of doing the full 10GB with your 192kb/s line.

All ADSL lines are physically capable of 640K down and 384K up throughput but the capacity is "soft" capped by Telkom to what you signed up with.

The download package i.e 2GB, 3GB or 10 and more etc is enforced by SAIX but some ISP's (WebAfrica , Axxess) are allowed to use their own authentication servers thereby bypassing SAIX and being able to offer bigger packages up to 30GB.

But SAIX still does bandwith management to throttle so called P2P and non web traffic and prevents ISP's from offering anything bigger than 30GB accounts or even so called "uncapped" accounts.

Web Africa's 10GB package is R300 excl VAT, so its actually R342. Also next month the 192k line rental will be dropped down to R270.

No MaD-CoW, you will get 10gigs with your 10gig account. Thats Downloading AND uploading btw.

With a 3gig account you will only get 3gigs. Same principle applies to a 4gig account - only 4gig usage. Please not that this is international bandwidth only (ie sites/servers that you are accessing that are hosted outside of this country)

Local is uncapped after you reach your 3gig. Not sure about the 10gig offers...
Note again that telkom might be capping local internet usage starting August. (To what, we dont yet know)

As far as I know, the ADSL lines here in SA are able to do 6 to 8Mb/s, depending on distance from exchange and line quality. But, as you say, it is then limited to the package taken.

There are two pre ADSL2(+) "modulation" schemes i.e the normal 8Mbps one and the longer ranged 1.5Mbps (G.Lite - 'splitterless') and needless to say Telkom went for G.Lite.

The 640K/384K limit I mention is what my router reports that I have and this what the DSLAM has told my router ... it is probably easier to cap the "upper" limit to this and then soft cap the various folks lower.

The short answer to your question is "yes". In fact, nothing stops you from getting the 192kbps line and an uncapped ISP account. You are *not* forced to purchase the standard 3gig capped account from TELKOM. Take a look at the 10gig or higher packages from Axxess, Web Africa, Imaginet, All You Can Eat to compliment your 192kbps line.

When I had a line test two years ago, the tech said my line could do 7.5 Mb downstream, but I guess that might be before they put the wire into the DSLAM or something like that. The tech then also expressed his private opinion on one ever getting that kind of speed from telkom, which has proved true to date.

Well, I felt even worse when my Diginet NTU was installed. That can do 4Mb, of which I only get 64K for a lot more money. For the ADSL, I at least got one 15th of what my line can do. For the diginet, I am getting one 64th.
