I understand the acronyms, I just don't see how its attractive to anyone trying to benefit from it? Other than philanthropists that is.

I just thought about this when viewing that other thread - who would invest in it?

it is a not-for-profit organisation....

it will sustain itself using the generated profit, which is not distributable and there are no shareholders.

they are usually designed to help communities, etc. Therefore no profit maximisation and therefore lower prices for the consumer.

And when the people who "run" it see that they can make a profit from it and they're pouring their heart and soul into it.....

What then?

Are you saying they will become corrupt?

We are a constant 42 members(as one leaves, another takes their place), who will ensure that the management and staff do not become corrupt, or fail to fulfill the objectives of the NPO ISP.

If you're rolling in the cash, don't use us. Please. We want to people that really cannot afford the costs of bandwidth.

We want people who care about cheaper bandwidth. It will lift the uneducated.

Yes, philanthropists will contribute to the NPO ISP in many ways. South Africans who intend making prices drop, will be our clients.

Philanthropists...

So what you are saying is if you can afford to post on this forum from the comfort of your own home then you don't apply to this service?

Just to make it clear.

We are trying to help those without enough money to enjoy the internet.

Some here, have a budget of several thousand for bandwidth costs.

We do not want them to expect us, to cater for them with the upper limits of bandwidth speed.

Some here have a budget of R1010 disability, for food, rent, electricity and the rest. They get by with very little spare. We want to help them and others with only a few hundred to spare.

I suggest you think a little, before you rip into a project that aims to help those that truly cannot bitch and moan about how slow their 4megs is...

I personally put in all my waking hours to make sure this project lifts off.

I am willing if required, to pour in thousands, cash, into making sure it sees the light of day.

What will you do today, to make bandwidth prices drop?

You understand the word non profit right?

Meaning the isp will make just enough to cover it's cost because it is a non profit isp.

Not everyone in this country is out to screw SA's.

the NPO will never make huge amounts of cash because the stakeholders are the users of the service.

the profits can only be used to bring prices lower. the members of the non-profit org. (the managers) cannot withdraw anything from the retained profit.

So to the critics, the people involved in this are not just sitting on their asses griping that bandwidth costs a lot in SA. In the end they too will benefit from THE CHEAPER BANDWIDTH AVAILABLE TO ALL! And not some remuneration package.

The fulltime/part-time staff in the org. will receive a salary from the work they rendered, the NPO is self-sufficient in this way like a company. but all surplus will be used to cover costs and make bandwidth cheaper.

@ Lightscribe - perhaps we could organize a little meet and drink for those of us in Cape Town (or whomever else wants to) to attend and discuss this further.

I'm not rolling in cash, but would like to be part of such an endeavour and contribute towards a project which really aims to help communities that are in need.

Don't find myself getting to grips with the matter by reading forums and websites and as most of the Kaapies whom know me here - I'm always up for a drink. :D

Hi Amida,

I did not mean it to sound like we do not want people who are rolling in cash, to support us at all.

Many will, in many ways.

Rather, that those who can afford top notch speeds, should not expect us to be dropping prices for them.

If we do offer the higher speed products, it will be for the ones who can afford the high costs, to have a chance to subsidise the costs for the poorer ones.

So, the people with money, who want high speeds, won't even be asked for donations. They merely have to buy packages from us, at market related costs, to do good for those that cannot afford costs.

Of course, we will always do our best to be lower in price, than other ISPs, for these high speed packages.

Ok this sounds all very good and all but what have you done so far - how far is the project?

I can pitch in an make a cool logo for the ISP, that someone else can use when making the website....

Hi Shake&Bake,

If you want to trek to the Helderberg area for a drink, sure. I no longer drive. Lower leg amputee. We could all meet at a set date and time, at Bart's Tavern or FatCats Cocktail bar, at the Pavilion in Strand.

You don't need to be rolling in cash to help. It's really as simple as a little bit of our time.

Also, knowing you helped employ and educate thousands, that would then be able to help employ and educate thousands more.

All it takes, is cheap bandwidth...

We're now at final confirmation of members. By next Friday we register.

Great, thx for offer. We do need to choose a name still. There are some options and we can fast track that by next Friday also.

As soon as we have the name, I will PM you with it.

Thanks again. :)
