or is it coincidence ?
Upgraded one of the PCs with service pack 3 (XP Home btw). Ran into "access denied" issues during installation, so I followed the instructions here pertaining to the run of reset.cmd. SP3 then installed successfully. Shutdown the box (had to go out) , came back later, switched on and..."no signal" on monitor, machine auto reboots, "no signal", etc, etc. Safe mode same thing...

Any ideas....?

No. Hardware failure somewhere if you ask me.
I will wait for the techie to respond :D

Sorted. Did the following (taken from the technet link in my previous post) :

1. boot from a Windows CD and go for the repair option.

2. Copy gdi32.dll from c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386\gdi32.dll to c:\windows\system32\gdi32.dll. (Do keep a backup copy of the old gdi32.dll in c:\windows\system32 directory)

3. Reboot normally

Moral of the story :

When you take a service pack from work to save bandwidth at home, make sure it's a recent build :D :D
