Then it is the managers job to fill you in on the long term strategy.

In any case, I would say the truth is probably closer to what Edwe is talking about - the manager does not understand and does not want to understand.

Of course, luckily not all managers are like that.
 
My boss is one of the foremost authorities in his field which encompasses my field.
So yes, he could do my job in his sleep, better than I can do it high on coffee.

That said, my previous job at Dial-A-Nerd I can confirm that Colin Thornton can do any techies job with his eyes closed.
Guy has been around and done it all, so yah, he's a boss that can do the job!
(he'll also kick your ass at Quake/Unreal/Etc).
 
Definitely not.

I have been factory trained (Winsford, UK) on the operation, calibration and maintenance of our online magnetic sector online process mass spectrometer, and I am the only factory trained (Warrington, PA, US) person in the southern hemisphere on our constant wave cavity ring down spectrometer. I am also factory trained in the US on the Agilent 7890 Gas Chromatograph.

I think in general bosses don't have to know everything that their employees do. My boss is so not hands on that he doesn't even know how far am I with my projects. he doesn't even know what I did last week for example. He gives you a project and lets you run with it and he only wants to hear from me once the project is finished.
 
I do her work & she does my work. We swop on a monthly basis because she says she's training me for when I finally decide to spread my wings

Nope, my boss couldn't do my job, but by the same token I couldn't do his (I'm a quantitative analyst, he's an accountant and its a requirement for the position).

I would settle for a boss who could do their own bloody job.

I would like a manager with development experience but I don't see it as a prerequisite. More important is the boss who can maintain an environment which is conducive to me getting my job done. The boss should handle all the petty politics from clients and business so that I can code.
 
My boss started out doing what I am but doubt he could go back and do it the same way as me due to how the industry has changed.
I definitely could not do his
