Counting cars?

Quick question...

I sometimes see guys in reflecting bibs, in the morning and afternoon sometimes at busy intersections, seemingly counting cars...

Why?

Shouldn't engineers do that? I'm sorry, but I know what an engineer doesn't look like

Why would engineers be counting cars. Seems like a waste of their time. They'd analyse the data after its been captured

I know that Taxi Associations employ people to take note of other associations using their routes. Might not be in your case though

I saw the same thing a couple of months ago at two intersections I cross on my way to work - traffic lights are now being installed at both.

Maybe they are checking the traffic flow or timing of traffic lights?

Exactly this. The stats would be used to eg. make advertising decisions, whether there is enough traffic in an area to constitute putting up a billboard for ad campaigns etc
