A coupé or coupe (from the French past participle coupé, of the infinitive couper, to cut) is a closed two-door car body style with a permanently attached fixed roof, that is shorter than a sedan of the same model, and it often has seating for two persons or with a tight-spaced rear seat.

A grand tourer (Italian: gran turismo) (GT) is a performance or luxury automobile capable of high speed or spirited long-distance driving. The most common format is a two-door coupé with either a two-seat or a 2+2 arrangement.

I am confused. I've always been under the impression that a Coupé has 2 doors.

It's all marketing. There are people that would love to drive coupes but have children and can't afford an extra car. Solution? 4-door coupe! Now shut up and give us your money.

A coupe is just a smaller or sportier version of a sedan or hatch. Don't read too much into the name. As Efitol mentioned, it's all marketing.

When they added the 2 and 4 series I understood that it was mainly to differentiate between 2 and 4 door vehicles??
Now you get:
1 series 3 door/4 door,
2 series 2 door coupe/4 door tourer thing.
3 series 4door
4 series 2 door coupe/4door Gran coupe (which as you said is not even a friggin coupe)

They've gone from 1=small 3=medium 5=full size 7=barge to a total mess.....not that I give a flying fig, but seriously...wtf?

A coupé by definition has two doors, but the marketing guys would rather you have your cake and eat it. This started with the Audi A5.

The crap started with the 1 series. You had the coupe (2 door with a boot) and then the hatchback came along (in 2 door and 4 door versions).

But yes, in general, the term is used loosely by manufacturers as and when the marketing sees fit.

Personally, I've always thought of a coupe as the 2 door version of a regular 4 door sedan.

I blame the Merc CLS for starting this. Coupé like shape, but 4 doors.
