JOHANNESBURG - An unidentified man has been caught on camera stealing a metal drain cover on Monument Road in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni.

The incident was captured on Sunday.

The clip shows the suspect loading the cover into the back of a blue Opel Corsa Lite driven by an unidentified woman. After several attempts the man is able to lift the drain and place it into the car after 5 minutes.

Ekurhuleni municipality spokesman Themba Gadebe said the city has not seen the video but would investigate.

“Cover theft is a serious challenge that is costing the city a lot of money. We will act on the matter once we have seen the video,” Gadebe said.

Police spokesman captain Jethro Mtshali said the matter has not been reported to police.

“I have not seen the video but would urge anyone who has it to forward it to the police so it can be used by investigators once a case has been opened,” said Mtshali.

Someone is hard up for cash...

South Africa. If it is nailed down- they steal the nails.
Good thing they haven't figured out about the platinum in the car's catilisator. 5 minutes with a hacksaw and your car sounds like a free-flow.

It would have been awesome if he fell into the drain after removing the cover.

They stole a cover in our residential road, someone in our complex drove into the hole, they had their daughter 7 sitting in front who hit the dashboard with her head and was hurt pretty badly.
Not to mention damage to the vehicle.

Lock the farker away!

Guessing you mean catalytic converter?

There's not really enough in there to be worth anything to anyone. And taking it out on most modern cars will results in a bunch of lovely error codes.

Hope they can catch these two ne'er-do-wells... All they do is steal a manhole cover for which they'll get a paltry amount of money, the CC have to spend lots of money to replace it, not to mention lawsuits from people who fell into said open hole...

Maak my net

Ah - that's the word.
They had that problem in New York a few years ago. Took the idiots ages to realize how little there is in one.

Also thought it strange it was Terios, thinking she was busy taking the seat built off as the manhole was near our complex gate.

You can buy fibreglass manhole covers. No excuse for metal ones.
