Interesting. Can the couple claim self defense by shooting people holding a knife?
If an attack is imminent you are allowed to take whatever action required. That is a summary of the law.
I'm not an expert in this, but I understand that if they have a lethal weapon and threaten your life, then you can respond with lethal force.
Good riddance to the savage.
I found the reporting a bit strange.
This:
The couple in the bakkie shot at the men as they approached the vehicle. This doesn't warrant the shooting.
Then this:
Mnisi's friend confessed to attempted armed robbery on Monday. Now this does warrant the shooting if they were being threatened, which is most likely.

As I understand it, One can only shoot when someone is pointing another firearm at one -not a knife. (Don't get me wrong I'd also reverse over the knifemen several times over, but am just trying to clarify the strange firearm laws we now have.)

You are allowed to shoot the attacker if he is coming towards you in a threatening way, holding a knife, which would make it clear to any 'normal' person that a lethal attack upon your person was imminent.
If he is sitting peacefully some distance away from you using a knife to carve biltong, you cannot.

You can defend yourself if you are in danger, one must just remember the process that follows after you shoot someone (if you are a man). You are immediately arrested and put in jail. This is just how the system works. You can then apply for bail, but it does not change the fact that you might spend a bunch of hours in a place where your roommates might find you rather attractive, and share thier affections with you.
I can almost say with a sure mind that if that happened to me and there were no witnesses, I'd get the heck out of there... self-defence or not... I don't want to have to go through all of that just because I defended myself or my SU/loved one.

Your understanding it wrong - if you believe that your life is in danger you can take them out anyway you like.

The best part...
After he was shot he went home. Now just a guess, it most likely took a while to get home. So there was time when he was slowly bleeding to death. Makes me feel better when a savage like that dies a slow painful death.

It is an indescribable pleasurable feeling being a survivor, especially if you have deleted your attacker. Ahh the bliss they must feel...the glory, the vindication, the excitment, the fullflment of life time of gun ownership, one can only imagine....
btw. I am totally against violence and feel that negotiation and pleading usually will suffice here in sunny SA..

The reporting is a bit odd.
But what the hell, at least one of them fired, and we now have one less of the vermin that plague this nation.
They should be sent for fire arms training, missing the second vermin.
