Has anyone watched this? What did you think? I found it to be quite damning of the current environmental movement, obviously. Well worth a watch.

what is it?? its blocked at work

It's a documentary about how the environmental movement tends to overlook animal agriculture as a problem, even though it's the biggest single cause of environmental damage.

Cows generate so much methane it's not even funny.

Just give me a premium cut though and I'll agree to look the other way.

The figures for the amount of cow dung dropped every day worldwide is also pretty comical.

When I hear terms like mass extinction thrown into the mix I grow skeptical. I'm not saying the whole thing is BS it just makes me wonder why they have to toss in emotive BS words to sell their movie.

There does appear to be increasing evidence that we are heading into a 6th mass extinction even that's primarily driven by humans. http://www.skepticalscience.com/sixth-mass-extinction.html

The fact remains that we are not in the middle of a mass extinction and when proponents of whatever you're selling in the trailer for your movie are already getting hysterical it just turns me off. It makes me wonder how much BS I'll have to wade through to get to the point. The problem with leftist propaganda ala Michael Moore is that Michael Moore set the standard for fudging the facts to fit the message and in my experience all these anti-corporate documentaries follow the same vein. The best you can hope for is a lot of opinions some selective facts and zero balance.

The "point" that I'm "selling" is this:
It's a documentary about how the environmental movement tends to overlook animal agriculture as a problem, even though it's the biggest single cause of environmental damage.

So the only question concerns the veracity of the claim that animal agriculture is the biggest-polluting industry. Even if one conceded that animal agriculture was not THE biggest single contributor to the destruction of the environment, it can't be argued that it's not a major contributor.

In turn, the question stands - why do environmental groups urge consumers to make such a huge range of lifestyle changes (swap your light bulbs, recycle, drive less, buy carbon credits to offset your travel etc), but not eating meat doesn't even enter the narrative?

Following from this - why is it that so many people become so defensive (I'm looking at your post, Nick) when faced with these questions. Is it even possible to call oneself an environmentalist, while being an omnivore?

I know watched the trailer. I was critiquing the trailer and what it says about the movie.

But, ok, on topic. The environmental movement was high jacked a long time ago by people with an anti-corporate rather than pro environmental agenda which is why I find it quite surprising that they would miss an opportunity. But, really I think the environmental movement is now almost exclusively about maintaining itself and providing a platform for middle and upper class ne'er do wells to make a noise and feel better about their privilege. The little amount of good it manages to do with fairly massive resources is laughably ironic.

So, ja, I'm glad you now know - it isn't much of a shock to some of us.
