Hi All

I'm hoping someone can advise me on what to do or where to go for recourse in this matter.

This is my story:
I purchased a car from a reputable dealership(Toyota) on 13 June 2014, it's a 2010 Golf 6 TSI, it was a trade in deal.
Exactly 2 weeks later(27 June 2014) I got home and there was smoke coming from the engine bay, opened up the bonnet and there was oil spewing out from the breather pipe, I took the pipe off, cleaned it and found that it was patched up previously with Q-bond but now it broke completely. So I immediately called the dealership and they gave me some long story about not driving the car n wat not. The next morning I went to VW and got a new breather pipe, cost me R815. The dealer has collected the original invoice from me and will reimburse me for that.

I told the sales guy that this hasn't left me very confident in the car, I haven't even paid 1st installment and already I'm repairing and that I was going to send the car in to have it inspected and put on a diagnostic machine, just for my own peace of mind. So I took the car in, the car is fine, it's a good car according to the adviser but the diagnostic machine shows 2 faults: misfire detected(ignition coil #2 needs replacing) and small/primary fan not working(only the large fan spins, very very loud).

I've been getting the run around from the dealer with regards to them fixing the 2 faults and I mean it's not MAJOR repairs so I'm not asking for much. Instead, they are telling me that I bought a warranty on the car why don't I just use that? I said I'm not happy to do that because these issues are not my fault, they were obviously defective when I took delivery of the car. By me using MY warranty that I paid for means that they are telling me, it's MY problem and they are not prepared to help. The sales guy says that they do not have the diagnostic machine for VW so they could not have known about these issues, what rubbish it that? This means they should not be selling VW's then.
I mean 80% of these new cars are made up of electronics anyway.

So... What can I do, I would appreciate advice from you guys.

Thanks in advance :-)

You bought a used car. Inevitably there will be worn and torn items and the car will not be perfect. Lucky for you the "car is fine". Just pay up or use your warranty.

I certainly wouldn't be worried about the car - a pipe going is quite possible and a couple of diagnostic faults are just that - not a train smash.

The Dealer who sold it to you should sort out the pipe, but if you have now found extra stuff that is actually covered under your warranty, I wouldn't worry - just get it sorted out, as it shouldn't cost you anything extra.

Thanks for the reply rwenzori.

I understand that it's a used car and I doubt that I'm being unreasonable, at least I think so, surely the dealer should sell a car that is good for more than 3 weeks, even if it is used. If they had checked the car properly and TOLD me about the faults I'd understand and I probably wud have decided whether I want to sit with repairs or leave the deal.

There is a standard 1000 km or one month "warranty" that most dealers will stick to.

What sort have mileage have you done in the past three months?

I would just use the warranty, it will be more than likely easier than trying to get the Dealership to pay for the repairs.

OP says he bought the car on 14/06 which is less than a month ago...

Yes, I understand that, but the standard used car warranty is for 1000km OR 1 month, depending on what comes first, that's why I questioned the mileage.

Engine is in good nick, just replace the coil and the fan and the car will be 100%. What's the problem?

Precisely - however, it is a common misconception among people who buy used cars that they should be better than new. :)

I delivered a demo last week and there was a minute chip on the back door that was pointed out to me, and I was asked why it hadn't been resprayed??

The chip was so small that I hadn't even noticed it, and I was driving the car on a daily basis.

Used, is Used, is Used, and that will always bring its own little set of problems. :)

I agree.

Listen if an engine seizes a day or two later things like that I understand, but the problems like the fan and coil would have been there when you took the car tbh. Just fix it and carry on with life :p

Hey guys

Thanks for sharing your opinions with me.
I appreciate the comments however to some degree I have to disagree, I mean, just bcoz it's 2nd hand doesn't mean it's got to be crappy and that I need to keep fixing things, especially after owning it for only 3 weeks. It's got to have some sort of quality guarantee, as a consumer I have the right to quality isn't it, even if it's 2nd hand, my finance contract is over R200k.

I'm realistic about this, i'm not jumping up and down for little scratches and dents n wat not and I understand that things break.
I've just traded in a car that hasn't given me a days trouble(bought 2nd hand by the way) for this car.

Parts for the 2 faults are just over R5k Excluding labour.

You didn't answer my question - have you done over 1000 km?

If not, then you can ask the dealer to sort the other stuff out.

Probably just over a 1000, I travel to work and back which is about 60km's a day + some weekend driving.

OK, close enough, rather go straight to the Dealer Principal at the branch, ask for a meeting, explain your situation and ask for his assistance. He should be able to give you the go-ahead to sort it out at their cost.

The 2 issues you're talking about, did you notice them when you were driving the car?

If not, then why would the dealer have noticed them? Are you expecting them to own diagnostics machines for all makes and models and strip each car just to make sure that they're all 100%?

You could have bought a brand new car for the amount of money, but you wanted a Golf that you could not afford to buy new. Be glad your warranty will cover it.

Diagnostics tools for reading parameters and error codes are generic. You only need the expensive brand specific stuff to make changes. A obd2 bluetooth scanner is under R100. It's in the dealers interests to be check for errors.
