We run both cPanel and Direct Admin servers, both have pros & cons, advantages & disadvantages but, it comes down to personal taste or the fact that some people like the usability of one over the other.
In some back to back tests we have performed, we have found that some client websites actually load faster on Direct Admin. However, if you are running a WordPress website cPanel seems to have better functionality but also at a higher cost.
As for other alternatives, we have not found any other alternatives as stable, secure and fast that we would be happy to roll out to our client base. (We stopped offering Plesk for these same reasons)

I have used ISPConfig (https://www.ispconfig.org/) many years ago for hosting some stuff for clients. Not sure if it is still good.

Having used cPanel for year and trying out direct admin for a short time. I like them both but lean towards cPanel due me having way more experience in cPanel
Direct Admin isnt bad, I just know where everything is on cPanel by muscle memory now

I've gotten use to DirectAdmin, but cPanel is beter. And I don't know why.
