Hi,

Got a friend who is looking to upgrade his PC incrementally.

At the moment he is looking to spend about R6000 total on CPU / mobo / RAM.

He's thinking i7 (not sure what model) / Asus Sabretooth P67 / 8GB DDR3-1600 1.5v

Any advice please ? Looking for best combination between these three things. PC is being used mainly for gaming.

Thanks

Typically, if you start upgrading one component, it creates a domino effect and you have to upgrade everything at once. How is he planning on upgrading incrementally?

I'm not a hardware guru, but I hear that that the Intel i7 2600(K) is the way to go at the moment.

apparently he's got a gts450 but is fine with that because he only plays cs 1.6 / cs:s. He just wants to spend about 6k now on a mobo/cpu/ram combo - and get a better gfx card later on if he wants to. I agree it doesn't make much sense though.

Hmmm... This normally is the bit where I copy and paste the following:

If he overclocks:

Intel Core i7 2600K = R2 670
CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Plus CPU Cooler = R250
Asus P8P67-M = R1 270
4Gb Corsair XMS3 1333MHz = R465

=R4 655

If he doesn't overclock:

Intel Core i7 2600 = R2 445
Asus P8P67-M = R1 270
4Gb Corsair XMS3 1333MHz = R465

=R4 180

If you say that he mainly plays CSS I'd really only look at that as it's what most takes then based on his current config get a chassis with proper airflow and a proper power supply. And maybe further along the lines then save a few and put in a proper graphics card?

Why he needs a Sabertooth is unknown, and it's R2 285.

I don't know.. There's lots of different configurations that one can look at. But if he wants what you're pointing at there:

Asus Sabertooth P67 = R2 285
Intel Core i7 2600k = R2 670
CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Plus CPU Cooler = R250
Corsair Vengeance (2x 4Gb) 1600MHz = R1 050

=R6 255
