CPU over heating

Hi all

This morning my computer randomly switched off. When I started it up again, it gave me an error "CPU overheated." So I opened a few applications and let it sit for a while. Then I used a program I found to look at the CPU temperature. It was sitting at 106C:eek:. I've got a Intel P4 3.2. I haven't over clocked or anything. So what could be wrong?:confused: I don't want to spend to much money fixing it :(

Well what kind of cooling do you have in your box?

First thing i noticed was your mobo temp is through the roof.
Is your cpu fan loose?

How hot does the room you have your pc in get?

If your fan or heat sink is loose, it isn't good news for your CPU at all. The maximum operating temperature should never exceed 75C. I'm surprised that it even operates at 106C.

If you know how to tighten your fan and heat sink, then give it a go. It isn't complicated at all. If it's a standard Intel issued HSF, then the lock down clips may just be loose.
 
Yea i dunno if your loose fan will solve your 64 degree mobo problem though.

It your not sure what your doing, send it in unless you want to try and fix it :)
 
Give your whole system a good clean, reseat your hsf and re apply thermal paste then see if that does not improve things.
 
All temps for a PC are directly corellated. Especially if the harddrives and board are only passively cooled

What core 3.2 Is this? Those lovely boiling Prescott's I presume. 106 Is near it's active throttling speed but shouldn't be killing the board. I think we have a voltage issue due to extreme motherboard temperature ( the higher the temp the harder differentiation between 0's and 1's become and more errors start slipping in while processing )

Dangerous to screw it in depends on your definition...i've lobbed a screwdriver at a motherboard and bent some cap's off in a rage but generally if you are a careful sort you should be able to sort it. I think rather you may have a lovely mat of dustbunnies roosting on the fan-sink cooking the CPU

Take a pic of the inside of the case and closeup of the Northbridge,Processor Fan and Graphics and lets see whats going on :)
 
Mikey do you have like a 3 mode normal fan lying around, take the side of your box off and put the fan on 3 and see how the temps go.
 
lol you need ot clean both surfaces then put a bit of tim on (half grain of rice size) the middle of the cpu, pressure will do the rest

I'm curious, any dust on the heat sink?

That use to cause my old P4 to oeverheat, was fine after i cleaned out the dusts...didnt even take my HSF off
