It al depends on the CPU. The P4 Prescot chips run EXTREMELY HOT!
The AMD's run cooler with the Athlon X2's running slightly hotter than the single core's. Atm my CPU is idling around 38c and full load about 44c with stock cooling.

No such thing as a optimal temperature, its not a car or something...
But anything from 35 to 50 Celcius is reasonable, and remember, the temperature diodes can even be out by up/down to 10, they are not the most accurate things on earth.
Anyway, I recommend Everest Home, it shows you everything possible about your PC in a clear user friendly format, shows all the temps like CPU, hard drive and motherboard and GPU and anything else that has a temp sensor, thought they stopped making that available for download. If anyone want me to mail it too them, PM me a e-mail adress* and I'll send it to you, its 3MB big.

Just checked it out and once I found the Actual TEMPs section it looks pretty cool!
Do you know how accurate the temp readings are because Nvidia Drivers tell me 56c while everest tells me 46c

Well, Rocky 1 is brilliant cause of the ending, so unexpected.
The temp thing ,well, I cant really say, my friends Intel monitor switches his CPU and mobo chipset Temps around while Everest gets it right, maybe there is a coding problem and it get it from the driver or the bios wrong, heck who knows.
