Heya guys/gals.....

I have a basic pc setup which I would like to make a bit faster/responsive and would like assistance as I'm new to upgrading pc's.
My setup is the following:
Msi ka780gm2 motherboard
Athlon II x245 cpu (2.9ghz)
4gig ram ddr2 800
9500gt nvidia gpyu

For now I wanna upgrade my cpu to the amd phenom II x4 965 (am2 backward compatible)

My question now is this....
Will this cpu work with my mobo? Will I need to update the bios to recognise the x4 cpu?

Any help is much appreciated and advice most welcome. That's the way to learn.

Thanx in advance to the help

The CPU wont do much for your pc's responsiveness, a small ssd as a boot drive and a better video card might give you better results.
Sorry I know u asked about CPU's but u did mention responsiveness and believe me even a 30gig SSD is a big jump.

I avoided that answer to stay on topic. But it is good to point out if its not to increase game frame rates then SSD would be the best upgrade.

Guys thanx much for the advice thus far. Ok so a ssd would be better for responsiveness you say. You spoke about frame rates? I belong to CTwug and love my gaming via this connection...

So yes I am upgrading my gpu to one in the price range of R1500. Would you then suggest I still go for the ssd or the cpu.

Sorry for all the questions but I am learning as questions get answered.

Phenom II X4 Deneb HDX945WFK4DGI x945 200 3.00 2M 6M C2 95 << its listed, looks like BIOS update is required too as mentioned
Yes, the x4 945 was on that list, but not the x4 965.
Seeing that the x4 945 is also an AM3 CPU, the 965 should most definitely work.

@cAfstA:
A SSD will improve application, game and file loading times, but it won't boost your framerate in games at all.
I would highly recommend SSD's for PC's that are being used for work, but it's still sort of a luxury for PC's that are just being used for gaming and other hobbies that aren't time critical.
If you do go for a SSD, then you should at least get a 60GB one, like the ADATA S511 60GB drive (peaks at 550MB/s read & 500MB/s write) @ ~R1400 when using it on a SATA 3 port).

You have a very entry level graphics card, so upgrading it to like an HD6850 and your CPU to the x4 965 will make a big difference in terms of gaming performance.
