Ok guys. I am upgrading the cpu in the next two weeks.

The choices I am going for is either the q6600,8400 or 8500. Reason I don't mention the q9300 is that it isn't supported by the mobo.

Which one should I go for?? Mostly only use the pc for gaming and web browsing. Do a little bit of overclocking not a lot.

Also a need a recommendation for a pc shop/business who I can either buy the cpu from or can do the installation for me. Installing a cpu is too intimidating for me,gfx and ram I am fine with but not cpu's. Needs to be pretoria based.

I would go for the Q6600 it's a good overclock cpu and it's quad core so it's future proofing. Which shop to buy it from i don't know I order my stuff online and install it myself.

I usually order my stuff online, its only the stuff which I can't install myself which I need to use a shop for. Gfx and ram I have no problems with but the cpu scares me too much to do myself.

Problem is all the shops I know I can trust is based in joburg/midrand or capetown.:(

Anyway leaning towards the 8400 or 8500. Been reading they tend to oc easier on the 680i chipset while the quads struggle.

Stefan if you can install memory and vga you can install cpu bud.

trust me man its very easy. Get the cpu pull off the old intel fan and follow instructions.

Plenty YouTube videos on CPU installation.

Go for the Q6600 if you're going to overclock I'd say, they OC to 3.0GHz on stock cooling, future-proof etc.

Where are you located?

I keep on reading everyone saying this like it's religiously true. Though this may be the case on occasions it's definitely not always true. I have a G0 stepping Q6600 with a thermalright aftermarket cooler and slightly raised voltages and thats what I had to do to get mine running stable 24/7 at 3gHz. I've tried pushing it a bit but the temps jumped a bit too much for my liking.

So although some folk may be able to do this, it's by no means the norm I believe:)

Which Thermalright cooler u have? Im thinking of getting the ultra 120, purely 4 oc'ing. I want to run my Q6600 @ 3.4, is it possible?

I am in pretoria, very close to menlyn park.

From what I have read the Q6600 doesn't overclock easily on the 680i chipset, many very experienced overclockers have struggled to get it stable to 3-3.2ghz.

While the opposite is true for the e8500 with many overclockers getting it to 4-4.2ghz on air.

I have the ultima 90 which only proved to be 2-3 degrees hotter than its bigger br0ther the ultra 120. Look, its definately possible as The_Techie has his OC'd on stock cooling and volts to 3ghz...me on the other hand was only able to do the same with a voltage increase and a pretty good aftermarket cooler. I suppose its luck of the draw sometimes:o

Good choice! I am running my E8500 on air (stock cooling) at 4.05GHz, for quite some time now and has never had any sorts of problems. Go for it!

Will see what I can manage . Only getting the cpu probably next week or the week after depending on the backlog at prophecy when they open on the 12th.

Will post results when I have the cpu. I expected I should be able to reach at least 3.5ghz. Good thing is the wolfdales seem to be more vcore limited than temperature.

Yea Ive got my Q6600 with a Coolermaster M220 or something and Ive got it up to 3.0Ghz any higher and my Prime95 temps go into the 70's... So Im sticking with that...
