CPU Upgrade, what will be the most cost effective?

Looking at upgrading my CPU. I am currently running this combo:

CPU : Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz LGA1155 Quad Core Ivy Bridge (WO_BX80637I53570K)

MB : ASRock Fatal1ty Z77 Performance LGA1155 Intel Z77 ATX Desktop (WO_MTB598)



What will be the best option here?

Any advice appreciated.

It depends. Why are you upgrading and what main activity will you e doing with it? Is the upgrade just for the sake of having new shiny things, or for performance reasons?
 
No matter which way you go, you'll have to upgrade both your CPU and motherboard because that socket is outdated - perhaps you can get an i7 3rd gen second hand, but from what you currently have that would not be a very noticeable upgrade.

I'd ask, why?

Is there something you can't run properly?

To me it looks like you want to upgrade just for the sake it.

Your CPU won't bottleneck any of the current GPU's, even a Titan Z or 980Ti.

I saw your comment in the Doom thread, if you really are looking to upgrade something you should do your GPU, besides that you have a unlocked CPU which you can just overclock, but your CPU is still great.

Why i7?

For gaming, most games don't make use of hyperthreading, so you may as well get a good i5

OP never said he wants to upgrade for gaming purposes, in which case I would agree with you.

I assumed he just wants an all round more powerful machine.

Besides what is a good i5 for his use case?

yeah, I just assumed he would be gaming because he posted in the doom thread.

It really depends on budget. i5-6600K is very good and is running Skylake, which is a big upgrade from ivy bridge, but i'm not sure if it will be compatible with his mobo.

Skylake has different socket - 1155 vs 1151 - so would have to replace mobo and RAM (DDR4), so budget would increase significantly.

I'm still trying to figure out what's best bang for buck AND a medium term future proof candidate; going skylake or sticking to 1150/1155 sockets. (but that's a debate for another thread :whistle: )

I'm running i5 4590(Maxwell) and don't have any issues with cpu intensive games. My mid term future proof is a good cooler and overclock to 4ghz

*Haswell. And unless you mean a 4590K, you can't OC.

Don't disagree with that at all, given that you have some of the hardware at hand. Cooler (for overclocking), RAM and a better GPU somewhere in between, should keep you going for the next 2-3 years. Could potentially even wait for the next tock (icelake) to be released. That's what I'm hoping for from my main setup.

However, if you had to buy from scratch (i.e. you need to replace a whole system) and brand new, what would the options be; would it be more beneficial (from a value position) to go Haswell or Skylake?

Not a thread derail or hijack as OP should take this into consideration as well.

Difficult question. Skylake does not offer much over Haswell but the memory bandwidth does help but that means you have to buy more expensive higher clocked ram & a MB that provides for overclocking and that becomes expensive.

If you ignore the brand new thing I would get an i7-4790, MB & 8GB of RAM from PotterH on Carbonite as the bang for buck simply cannot be beaten.

Well, Skylake is slightly faster than haswell (depending on what i-x you are comparing) If your mobo supports haswell, IMO I don't think its worth upgrading the mobo for skylake, and finding one that isn't DDR4, causing you to replace RAM which is even more money.

Browse on carbonite, i often see i7 3770 cpu's being sold for cheap.
I got my i7-4790 for R2699 when they still retail for R5k+. If it's cheap enough the usual i5 vs i7 performance debate just falls away.
