I have a 1.8ghz Core2Duo
I did some monitoring in games and it seems that the CPU usage goes up near the 100% mark on both cores when the game gets laggy, while the GPU usage goes from around 20% to 80%

Does this mean that the culprit causing bad performance is my CPU?

A 1.8GHz C2D is very slow. Even some of the 3GHz ones will struggle with games like BF3!

Okay thanks, so, second question, what kinds of processors can I use to replace the current one in terms of fitting on my motherboard. Gigabyte 965

Google your motherboard and get the specs which will have the socket type which you can match to a processor? Or just wait for someone to do it for you....;)

If you can get your hands on a second hand Core2Quad 9500 or similar + an aftermarket cooler (for overclocking) then you should be back in business.
It may be pretty difficult to find those now. Do not spend more than R1k on the CPU, because then you can just as well go for a Sandy/Ivy Bridge setup for like R1k more.

I know someone selling a q9550 for 1k negotiable in your area if you're interested. That's a pretty classic CPU.

I am also looking for a second hand quad proc.
Currently using a E6600 @ 2.4Ghz in the machine. Can't handle more than 2 or 3 HD streams without choking the machine.
Was going to buy an i5 but upgrading to a faster LGA775 based proc seems to make a lot more sense.

I am using this machine for Mezzmo, Plex Media Server and SQL Server.
