Hey guys,

I am swapping CPU with a new one. The problem is that I have an aftermarket cooler on my current CPU, and I don't have any more thermal paste to put between the new CPU and the cooler.

So, do I need to find more thermal paste to put on the new chip? Or will it be okay without it? Because finding thermal paste can be difficult.

OK, thanx for the input. So where do I buy thermal paste in Cape Town/Durbanville?

Any computer supplier or shop doing upgrading and repairs should be able to help. A flee market selling computer hardware is maybe your first choice. Best is artic silver but is about 70-100 bucks. Corex or Sahara would have, if you have a friend!

Try Sybaritic. I've bought that new Arctic Silver Arctic Alumina thermal paste from after cleaning and reattaching my heatsink and I was astonished at the MUCH lower temperatures the CPU was running afterward. Seems like the stock paste that comes boxed with the CPU and heatsink is not as good as I thought.

Just remember to pay them with a EFT (bank transfer). Any other option is full of hassles.

Order some Arctic Silver 5, the only and only paste.

www.sybaritic.co.za have it for 'bout R100 bucks.

Otherwise, just use some Bovril :P
(No, don't actually use it, I was just kidding)

D'oh! Didn't see your post before posting my comment, haha.

Just to let you know that I contacted my supplier. He said they have all three types on my site but all are limited in stock.

The reason for that is because most shops sell their CPU's boxed with a comparable fan/heatsink. The boxed heatsink has thermal compound pre-applied. It's not common these days to buy CPU's by the tray.

Don't aftermarket heatsinks come included with some thermal paste? Makes sense that they would?

They do, but i used all mine on the first chip. You only get tiny bit with the fan.

Thermal Interface Material

The best TIM you can get is CoolLaboratory Liquid Pro (imported by www.synapsys.co.za). It's a liquid metal and cannot be used on aluminium, but it's up to 100 times more efficient in thermal conductance than more conventional TIMs. If you have an aluminium HSF, use Arctic Silver 5 or Arctic Ceramique, also available from Synapsys. They ship countrywide.

When you get your paste, I recommend you try this technique...

Apply enough thermal paste(rice grain sized) to make a layer of 1mm-2mm thick paste, any thicker will have an opposite effect and can overheat the CPU, then using an ear bud in circular rotations spread the Paste on CPU equally.

It's important to clean the old paste off first... I use nail polish remover and a scratch free cloth

My CPU Temp dropped by 2C using this technique, went from 51C > 49C
(Athlon 64 and Thermaltake Silent Tower Heatsink)
