Cape Town - All classes at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology were suspended on Monday following disruptions at its Mowbray, Cape Town, Bellville and Wellington campuses.

CPUT spokesperson Lauren Kansley said lectures were interrupted and staff removed from their offices.

The situation had since calmed down, after all classes, including lectures for part-time students, were called off.

"Earlier today, Vice Chancellor Dr Prins Nevhutalu engaged directly with protesters when they occupied the administration building in Bellville campus," she said.

Police and campus security would inspect vehicles and ask to see student cards before letting anyone onto the premises.

"The resumption of classes will be decided later tomorrow and communicated to staff and students. All staff, however, are expected to report for duty, since the university remains open," Kansley said.

Last year, property was destroyed during weeks of protesting on the Bellville campus, as students demanded the scrapping of their existing fee debt.

Scores of students were arrested and charged with public violence.

Last week, small groups of students caused sporadic disruptions on the Bellville campus.
