Crackdown on road users promised

People have no respect for traffic officers anymore, and it's all their own fault.

;)I agree. I saw a traffic officer on a motorcycle nearly being wrecked by a lady in a tattered Honda Ballade. When he tried to stop her to show her the error in her ways a young guy in a Double cab that was driving behind the officer, hooted at the officer and showed him signs because the officer was slowing down the traffic. If I was that officer I would have locked the double cab driver up and thrown the keys away!
The road using public needs to change their attitude towards driving and be more forgiving toward others. AND all road users should remember that when you use public roads your priorities should be with safe driving and not any other secondary activity that you may be legally or illegally indulging in whilst driving! (Make-up, texting, phoning, eating, chatting, shaving etc.....)

Negligence

Most accidents are just due to driver error, so goo on them, and no excuses by drivers if they are doing something wrong.

Definition of an accident.
Accident in Law: an unforeseen event that occurs without anyone's fault or negligence.
Negligence generally means careless or inadvertent conduct that results in harm or damage, which is quite common in automobile accidents.
Proving negligence is the hard part.

But taxis will still drive down the wrong side of the road during the day, yes?

Drunk drivers are not the only problem.

Ok ok ok, I just used the popular word, traffic collisions then.

The UK investigates accidents properly, wish we did the same.

Drunk driving is a MAJOR problem. Enforcement of it is non-existant.

Drunk driving is a big issue.

But I reckon an even bigger issue is people that just simply don't know how to drive properly.

Not saying that drunk driving is not an issue(although I am still to see stats supporting this)
I would just rather they stop picking on the low hanging fruit which they have already done so many times, with no changes in road fatalities.
They need to enforce proper road rules, of which drunk driving is just 1 of the issues.

Some communities in the ballito area have installed their own traffic calming measures at their own cost. Just submitted proposals for approval and got local business to cover it
Great idea this. I was told by the DA councillor and someone from the metro that is "couldn't be done". But am going to investigate further, thanks.....

They should make all places with ramps have the other cross over corner have large nails bent to face traffic from there.. I.e. To normal cars.. No difference, to people using the corner to impromptu turn into lane.. Busted tires

Calls for tougher sentences for reckless drivers

01 September 2015 at 13:26 by Zongile Mthimkhulu - The Road Traffic Management Corporation says reckless and negligent driving needs to be classified as a schedule 5 offence.

It wants current legislation to be reviewed so that more severe punishment can be meted. It could see arrested drivers spending a week behind bars before applying for bail.

The call comes as 141 fatalities and 110 accidents were recorded on the country's roads this past weekend alone.

I assume that it's worse in SA, in the UK they do a alcohol breath test in any accident the police attend to.

Why would anyone even be tempted to drive drunk when you have uber :wtf:

Can't understand the mentality. People do it week in and week out. The innocents is my concern. These people infuriate me.

It's a good idea to increase the severity of the punishment, but I think in SA the problem has more to do with enforcement and the judicial system. The chances of being caught are very slim (for any type of offence unless you are in an accident), that is why so many people drink and drive, speed, drive recklessly etc. Especially reckless driving you will almost never be pulled over for, because traffic police are focused mainly on speeding. If you do get caught, chances are you can get away with a bribe. Even if you get a ticket, many people just ignore it, and eventually it goes away, because the judicial system cannot cope with the level of lawlessness in SA. Recent articles showed more than 90% of speeding fines go unpaid in JHB and Durban. And nothing happens to these people because there is not enough manpower to fight it. And our jails are so full that even for murder you will only spend a few years, as a recent high profile case shows.
