hi,

my car ran bearings and crank a couple of weeks ago. mechanic says his engineer says the crank cant be saved. must get a new one at agents. agent asks R14000.

I want to get a 2nd opinion. any suggestions/referrals here in the cape?

the crank is a very sensitive topic. what exactly is wrong with the crank?
if its not too badly messed up, and if your in a bit of a spot, maybe balancing and knife edging it would be the way to go. Like i sed can only be done if its not cracked or something.

the knife edging i reluctantly suggest cos you but since you might be in a bit of a bother at moment thought i should. Reliability of an edged crank is debatable you also loose top end power.

what car is this? and have you checked other places other than the Agents? the Agents prices 8/10 times is usually ridiculous and you just want to slap them.

Thanks for the reply

its a focus st2.5 5 cylinder. I tried 2 other places masterparts and goodhope spares but they dont stock it and referred me to agents. Most of the 'rings' where the bigend and main bearings run are ok its only on this one ring where the bigend came loose where the most damage is.

I dont know of any other places that I can try.

Try eezy motor spares in strand. they're breaking a 2.5 focus for spares.

Bud. You need to know the size of the rod journal after wear and how much under size it is. And then whether they make that OVERsize bearing.

Once a hardened journal is damaged and polished, it just wears more. You need to check for crank walk. You need to check for crank straightness.

Your is a turbo engine.

In SA, most engineering shops cannot machine a turbo crank to the tolerances that are required by OEMs. So they tell you to get a new one.

R14K wow.

BTW Volvo should be more expensive than Ford.

BTW I have no clue why the guy suggested knife edging your crank and how this would help a rod bearing failure.

Silver6933 gave some good advice.

Ignore that knife edging post.

R14k is in the price range for a crank, the cost is not out of the ordinary unfortunately.

The most cost effective route would be to source a low milage import motor and swap motors.

A new crank is not just simply installed. The whole engine has to come out, and you looking at a minor/major overhaul depending on the condition of the parts once its all in pieces and examined.
