Can this be done? I have a lot of 1GB sticks lying around and thought I can put it to good use. I got a 4 port usb hub. I seen some attempts with linux but I want to do it with windows. The price of a 4GB is next to nothing but I want to try the exercise if it is possible.

You'll very quickly saturate the bandwidth of the USB 2 hub. I really don't see a point in doing it with flashdrives when you can get a SSD that has like 10-30x the speed of USB 2.0 flash drives!

I also tried this a few months back but I haven't been able to find a working solution for windows yet.

It seems like it should be easy but it looks like it is driver dependent.

Depends on the OS I guess but it can be done. For example: Enterprise NAS OSs like NexentaStor does it.

With NexentaStor you have a ZFS Mirror (eg. duplicate like RAID 1 but better) over 2 flash drives from which the OS runs.

It is also possible with FreeBSD and although I haven't tested I'm almost certain it'll work with Linux.
