Creative Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit

Nearly all of my songs are encoded at 128k. Obviously I can't up-encode them to lossless or whatever...

Just out of interests sake, my current 10gb of 128k would take up how much space if encoded flac?

I think it may be around 10x bigger so probably a 100GB

Okay. Just remembered it's currently about 16gb, so maybe I'll start looking into lossless songs once I have another hard drive and a 160gb iPod... Speaking of which, do you think the higher bitrates will make a difference playing off an iPod?

yes it will, but the measure will depend on what headphones you have.

No I'm sorry, but if you can hear the difference in quality between decent onboard and a Sound Blaster woteva, then you should be in the sound industry, cos you have GREAT ears.
Really, it's a waste of money, buy some nice speakers rather.

Most onboard sound today is good, that's why I always recommend people go for the High-End stuff because you will notice a difference, the cheap cards are in most cases not worth it, and you won't notice a difference, if you do it's probably placebo.

With regards to the OP, I don't recommend the live! 24bit, it might be a little better than your onboard/ipod but if you can get it for -R50 (what I would pay for it)then it's not that bad actually.

The Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit was not actually a member of the Sound Blaster Live! family, because it lacked the EMU10k1/10k2 processor. It was a stripped down version of the Audigy Value, with an SNR of 100 dB, software based EAX, no advanced resolution DVD-Audio Playback, and no Dolby Digital 5.1 or Dolby Digital EX 6.1 playback. A proof of this is that on Linux operating systems, when using the ALSA sound system, the module that is used for the Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit is snd-ca0106, while the module that is used by the Sound Blaster Live! is snd-emu10k1.

Oh well. The main reason i'm getting a sound card in the first place is because my Z-2300s aren't friends with my onboard, and it's only gonna cost R150, so I'm happy.

Ok, but try to bring it down to R100 at least if possible, not such a great card really.

Deals already pretty much done, so R150 it is... I presume it would also take a bit of the load off the CPU...
