The ZEN has a vibrant, crystal-clear 2.5-inch TFT LCD sporting 16.7 million colours, bringing your videos to life. Its user interface is one of the best in the business and doesn’t imitate that of an iPod.

MP3 players, personal media players (PMPs), DRM, nano, touch, classic, shuffle and ZEN – the wonderfully wicked word play game of media on the go.

Featherweights, lightweights, and heavyweights – SACM’s new classification of PMPs. In the lightweight division of PMPs: Apple’s new nano and Creative’s new ZEN. Ready for the count; ready to rock and roll!

In 2006, the Creative ZEN Vision:M won the ‘Best of Show’ and ‘Best Portable Audio & Video Device’ awards at the International Consumer Electronics Show, as well as the ‘Red Dot Design Award’. And ever since, Creative has been producing PMPs that rival Apple’s iPod line.

Many regard Creative’s offerings as better than Apple’s; and those who do surely know what they talk about (CNET’s editors are no lightweights and their word is gospel to technophiles).

Creative’s new ZEN is an incredibly small and versatile PMP, packing a punch of note. It comes with a 4GB SD Card, which can be filled with media, removed and replaced with a larger capacity flash drive. This means that if you are the proud owner of a new ZEN, you can have as many SD Cards as you like, all filled to the brim with your favourite music, ZENcasts, photos, videos and audio books. Then, depending on your mood, you can choose one suitable to your mood, slip it into your ZEN and be on the road in no time.

It’s also the first Creative player to support unprotected AACs, meaning that because of the compression used by this format, you can load a 4GB SD Card with roughly 8,000 songs.

The ZEN also supports iTunes Plus tracks from the iTunes Store in addition to MP3 and WMA music files. If you feel like just listening to the radio, the ZEN has a built-in FM receiver with 32 presets (for the same functionality on an iPod, you have to purchase a separate FM receiver that plugs into your iPod).

With a fully charged battery, you get 30 hours of continuous music playback or five hours of video playback.

Overall, the ZEN is a class act and outperforms the iPod nano in many aspects. If this reviewer could have his way, the ZEN would have scored six out of five. After all, no review is subjective. As soon as a person is given a product to review, that review becomes a summary of that person’s personal experience with the specific product. In this case, Creative’s ZEN rocks and sets the benchmark for PMPs in this market segment.
