I want to start building a credit record and I'd rather not take out clothing accounts if I don't have to.

I'd like to know which bank is most friendly towards people without payslips, just payments from clients.

I know Capitec won't give one, and I tried FNB but they also declined.

FNB will give you a credit card as long as you have cheque account and have money coming in regularly, I got a gold credit card from them when i was still as student and i told them i was self employed(i had some credit history because i opened a store acc with MRP), i think your biggest problem is the fact that you dont have a credit history, it will be difficult getting a credit card without one.

I think you really should just get a store account, try woolworths, But dont apply online because the system will automatically decline you due to lack of credit history, go to a store and deal with a person, that way if you get declined you can ask you to review your application manually and thats where your bank statements will help. Just make sure you still have money left over at the end of every month on your bank statements else they will say you wont afford to pay back the store card and decline you.

Remember everytime you apply for credit in a short period of time its bad for you. It further reduces your chances of getting credit.
