My credit card was used fraudulently to buy air tickets from Mango and SAA.

Nedbank reversed the transaction and credited my account but I am curious as to how it could have happened? I seldom use that credit card and it was never lost or stolen. It was in my wallet the entire time. How on earth can someone purchase tickets (presumably online) without being in possession of my CVV number? That points to a bank employee who issued the card as being the culprit as nobody else could have seen the CVV number.

Also, is it not possible for Mango and SAA to identify (by way of passenger name) who used the credit card to buy a ticket? I feel like there must be away to find the culprit.
 
Its actually pretty easy if you every used that card at a restaurant its easy enough to pull the info without cloning. BUT what is more interesting is that an OTP etc wasn't requited...
 
Either a bank employee is involved but also likely is your details were taken down months ago at a cafe, a restaurant or whatever. They sit on the details for a long time so you can't mentally track it back to anywhere. CVV is pretty easy to capture if someone is holding your card.
 
The same happened to someone very close to me !

Got a call from FNB, funny transactions going off that is failing, they are blocking the card !

Random amounts totally R9000 !

Scary how thief's get details and trying their luck !

Had very similar thing happen, was a while ago before that 'in-contact' service where they message you about transactions. The one time, the fraud happened before I had even picked up my new card! So definitely some internal scamsters...

Asked a friend who works in a fraud team why airplane tickets - apparently what they do is offer to buy plane tickets for someone, they buy the tickets with a stolen card, then get a confirmation number, give that to the unsuspecting customer who then pays the fraudster the price.

Fraudster disappears knowing ticket will be cancelled, but doesn't care because he's now got cash.. poof

I really almost never use that card in public places, but I cannot 100% say that I have never offered it anywhere; it is indeed possible.

Similar happened to me with my Virgin Money CC last year October to make purchases from a UK online store. I last used the card in March 2016 but never in store, only ever on line so mistakenly I never checked the account until I got an SMS that I was late on a payment. I have no idea how the details of the CC got out but considering that ABSA manages Virgin Money CC's I am not surprised, besides our bond ABSA have been beyond useless in the past.

I did 2 online CC transactions in the last 2 weeks that did not require an OTP. One of them was on Travelstart for 2 plane tickets totalling R13k. The other was on Amazon on Monday.

Dunno if there is a glitch on the VISA website/app or whatever you call it???

Don't know abt travel start but amazon doesn't need otp... the US security systems are actually less secure than ours...

It depends on the website and not VISA - some websites you'll see have the verified by VISA icon on their page...

OK, so they don’t have to circumvent the OTP requirement. Just shop where an OTP is not required. Easy peasy.

Yup, exactly - end of the day though, it would become that sites issue.

As long as you report the fraud within the time frames - the credit card company will request that company to provide proof of payment, they won't be able to, and if the goods have been dispatched - unlucky because you're not getting paid for it
 
Another incidence of CC fraud.

The only time I used my credit card recently was on Booking.com and the Eurostar website. So are they compromised? It happened the day after I supplied CC info online to those two sites.
