Credit Card - Petrol

Hi there,

A friend told me that she thinks many garages were starting to accept credit cards for buying petrol nowadays. Does anyone know if this is true?

Has anyone tried it?

If so, are there fees? I remember paying once for petrol on the CC and it was treated as a cash purchase which meant extra fees.

Your guess is as good as mine.
BP near us has an electronic billboard that says they do accept CCs, and a badly printed sign on the pumps that says they don't.

Go figure.
 
Well as far as I know law prevents filling
Stations from accepting CC for fuel. The NCA
Must be ammended before it is possible
 
dunno about credit cards, but they surely take debit cards...

They're supposed to by law, to accept credit cards.
However, the one BP close to me has a sign saying (printed on paper) that they do not accept Credit or Cheque cards.

Which is against the T&C of credit card companies. Report them if they do that.
 
I don't know if it is still the same but credit cards for fuel purchases are treated as cash.
 
I suppose it is handy if you don't have a petrol/garage card and no cash. However what about an alternative at toll gates - are they accepted in those card-only lanes too? Probably not worth it when you consider the charges (kinda like drawing cash from an ATM and having to pay those saswitch fees). Just to vent some steam - anyone else notice how the toll fees seem to have gone up everytime you use them...grrr!

The banks are going to drop the 5% fee at fuel stations....... exactly for this reason. So garages have no reason to not accept them.

Credit cards have previously been unacceptable for fuel purchases in South Africa because of the handling fee that sellers have had to absorb.

This fee, which retailers have to pay, is a percentage of the transaction value, despite the profit margin on fuel being fixed.
