Essentially I'm looking to duplicate the functions of virtual credit card for online purchases. I've got one of those and they are crap due to the lack of AVS. I've got a credit card already, but I'm looking for something I can use in a more "carefree" way.

So the plan is to grab another credit or cheque card and set the limit to something lowish...like a grand or so.

I've taken a quick look:

Virgin Money - Zero usable benefits and site is pretty broken...but no fees.
FNB - Would probably break even after benefits on the unlimited smart cheque one. More hassle than VM

I know we've got a bunch of supporters of both here, so I'm keen on hearing opinions

Questions on FNB specifically:
1) Do I understand it correctly that I can use the cheque card to swipe both fuel and groceries and based on that combined spending is counted towards the 1k spending requirement? And then the reward percentage is applied to both and from that you get eBucks?
2) Is the overdraft directly linked to the cheque card? i.e. net effect is similar to a CC?
3) Do online purchases count towards the spend requirement?

Fuel has a guaranteed 2.5% from the fuel spend. Rest is based on your reward level. Overdraft is directly linked so shows as part of balance. And thirdly no, only actual swipes

I see. Thanks for explaining. Is it all in eBucks or can you opt for actual cash?

Why is the virgin site broken?
Seems to be fixed now. Had some buttons that weren't working & server error messages when I checked earlier. Must've been a temporary glitch.

Ebucks, spend at spend partners. I get about R300pm worth of ebucks back without trying too hard, half a fuel tank :)

Nice.

Not going to switch banks though so I'm going to get <100 bucks...just looking to fix the risk on the CC in a cost efficient fashion and maybe score some bonuses along the way (build credit record, R5 bucks road side assist etc).

I am assume u bank with investec? Why not make use of their rewards program and just get a VM CC. I bank with fnb use my cheque card for day to day stuff to get ebucks and then use VM for most online stuff.

Yip. Pretty much - just trying to work out whether adding a VM card would be better than adding FNB.

Leaning towards the FNB pay as you go one at the moment - the R23 one.

Is there a transaction fee on using the FNB cheque a/c online?

Why do you require AVS?

If you are looking for a card to use online only, try Capitec?

Well I've tried rolling with non-AVS VC and my conclusion was "screw this sht".

That is a definite option too...I'm guessing we're talking some kind of global account, no? Those should have AVS imo.

Essentially - I'm good on the credit front & any bank will accept me....which one for best benefit/cost given that this is a secondary account for online?

I'm confused. OP, why do you want a low limit but yet you want to spend on this card to get the benefits of eBucks? They seem like conflicting objectives.

Why do you refer to it as a spend requirement? What is your goal?

Which one?

Doesn't Entropay implement avs?

AFAIK all MasterCard issuers must accept an AVS messages from merchants. If not, they are not compliant with MasterCard rules.
On the other hand, the issuers don't need to verify the physical address, just that the card is in a good standing order.

Accept vs issue. I'm not looking for someone to accept a AVS card - I'm looking for someone that issues a prepaid AVS card.

No. Been there - done that. Entropay is fine...except no AVS...which makes it crap.

The thinking is "get a new card...totally spartan...oh but may be score some benefits".
