Credit check on someone else

I want to rent my property out (privately - my current agent has proven to be somewhat less than effective). So, I would like to do a credit check on the prospective tenants.

How do I go about doing this?

(sorry if this is in the wrong section of the forums)
 
How much does it cost?

The problem with credit checks, is it affects the view someone has on your credit risk if there are lots of attempted checks. Wouldn't want someone checking mine all too often (even though it should be squeeky clean)
