I was thinking of this the other day, because my mom wants to apply for a contract with VC - it's a special with a free phone, costs R20 per month, on a Topup 49 package.

Do they do less strict credit checks on a package like this? Their risk is much lower, because you're only contracted to pay R480 over the lifetime of the contract; and you can't run up a huge phone bill since it's a Topup package.

It's obviously aimed at the lower income market, and I was just curious whether pensioners (for example) would have an easier time getting this package than a more expensive one.

Think the important thing is that your mom's pension would be sufficient to cover the monthly expense. Otherwise it's easier to take out the contract under your own name.

For VC contracts you need a min salary of R3800, and you need debt, like an Edgars account or something, this is what the peeps from VC in my mall told me, not sure if it's true.

I saw that contract as well. Decent offer. But expect the full works when it comes to credit checks. VC are like that :o

The shocking this is that a week and a half later, she's heard absolutely nothing from vodacom. No-one contacted her to say her application wasn't successful; no-one answers the phone at the number they tell you to call for subscription queries; everyone she has managed to speak to promises to get someone to call her - with absolutely no effect.

It's disgusting customer service.
