Crime Stats

are we?

Seventh United Nations Survey of Crime Trends and Operations of Criminal Justice Systems, covering the period 1998 - 2000

I suppose it all depends how you look at things.

So  eeek SA leads in Rape/ Murder which is extremely worrying:mad: but if you take the overall crime per capita then surprise surprise, everyones second favourite destination, New Zealand is second and RSA comes in 10th:

edit: I see the dude above is on the same page as me and also types faster

We are also third in murders
second in assault
fourth in burglaries

We have the ninth most police.

It should be noted that this stats is the number of cases reported
and do not bring the crimes committed per population into account.

It is safe to say we are the crime capital of the world.

Yes, that is true.
Shoplifting and other demeanors count as crime there.

note this disclaimer: Crime statistics are often better indicators of prevalence of law enforcement and willingness to report crime, than actual prevalence

Yeah - saw that but it really makes me wonder though. Higher indicators of law enforcement in South Africa? I doubt it. Willingness to report crime? Maybe seeing that we have higher incidents of serious violent crime. I note that South Africa isn't on the list for adults prosecuted per capita or convicted per capita.

That just goes to show what people in other countries consider a crime and what is actually reported

Murder/Rape/Assault/Aggravated Robbery (all crimes that SA is "best" at) are not the easiest of things to ignore / not report to the police.
On the other hand things like jay-walking, littering and public drunkedness would feature on our list of national sports where in other countries these are reported as "crimes"

so that's why you'll see a country like finland higher up the ladder than SA
