So I am doing a presentation to my class about crime for my project. For the oral I would like to open with a quote. I remember some time ago, a political leader said that "crime is not a problem in SA". I can't remember who though. I would like to know who it was, when and where so I can give the full, proper quote (and get more marks for my originality :D).. I think it was Thabo Mbeki, not sure though.. Can you please provide a URL if you can, thanks :)

From: S.Africa: President Mbeki asks what is crime? The answer

But let me say that on Tim Modise's show on TV2 the other night, President Mbeki explained that crime is not a problem because he holds many imbizos (chat & feedback sessions) with "average South Africans" in the townships and rural areas. Translation: He only speaks to blacks. And according to THEM, crime is not a problem. So that should answer our questions. Basically, we should all shut the hell up!

I think Mbeki said "crime is a perception", and of course the ex-Police/Security minister Charles Nqakula said that people who continue to moan about crime can leave the country.

Might you be thinking of when Mbeki said 'crime is not out of hand' ... can't find an actual news article now quoting that right now, just this indirect reference, but with a bit of Googling you can probably find one, or use this: http://www.mg.co.za/article/2007-02-02-thabo-mbekis-new-age-of-denial

I seem to recall he also made comments along the lines of that the crime problem was just a 'perception', and he has also followed the 'blame it on whites' tack where he also suggested that crime was being blown out of proportion by people with 'reactionary agendas' who want to 'undermine our democracy'. He also made comments blaming the perception on 'white racism' saying that whites were just afraid of the 'swart gevaar'.

I suspect if you dig around you'll find similar types of comments from Ngqakula ... cf.:
