So I just found out that Alt-PrintScreen automatically crops the screenshot to the active window only. Meanwhile I've been waste ages cropping screenshots all these years.

This is a MS conspiracy...they put mad useful stuff into their OS & then forget to tell anyone about it.

Thanks for the tip - also never knew that.

just get a free screen capture util and you can capture scrolling pages, marquee regions etc.

I used to use the alt+prntscrn but since Vista/Win7 I now use the built-in snipping tool. Cool to be able to highlight or quickly circle screenshots errors and then send it off to the client.

There are plenty of free tools out there to supplement the windows screen shot feature.

It's not a crop - it's a snap of the active window.
And it's not a secret. Have you ever entered 'screen capture' in the Windows Help? I've been using that shortcut for >15 years.
Windows Help is a most under-utilised feature. Try it some time.

Yip, also been using it forever. Other handy ones I use often:

Ctrl + Esc - open start menu
Alt + Tab - next app
Alt + Enter - properties (or if more than one file selected, total disk space used)
Windows Key + Break/Pause - shortcut to device manager
Alt + F4 - close window/app
Ctrl + C - copy
Ctrl + V - paste

I use an application called Gadwin printscreen

It will automatically grab the screen and save it. You can set the file type, the focus area, hide the cursor and the key to trigger the capture.

I have set it so that it wont even popup and tell me that it has captured. I just tap the button and it snaps away, automatically cropped to the size of the window and then saved to a folder.

Its free as well !

+1 Gadwin is great and seems to be the best of the free stuff. It's nice that it save it automatically for you.

+1

Been using alt+prtscr for years. The snipping tool is one of the best tools in Win7 IMO.
