crossed lines.. is there such a thing?

hey guys,

just wondering, is there such a thing as a crossed line, and can it effect the performance of your ADSL...

a friend of mine noticed that when he picked up my phone, he could hear other people talking at some stages of the day, is this what they refer to as a crossed line? or just a coincidence for the day?

can it effect ADSL, has anyone experienced this before?

Cross lines do exsist, have expierence it a few times though but not on an adsl line.

As far as your adsl line goes it shouldnt affect you since vioce and data run on the same line and phones come in and out of my house all day long it does seem to affect my lines capablity
 
Crossed lines is where the individual wires in two sets of twisted pairs have been switched, i.e lets say we have twisted pairs A and B in one run, C and D in the next run... we have telephone line X and Y... what should happen...

X1->A1->C1
X2->A2->C2
Y1->B1->D1
Y2->B2->D2

What happens in twisted pair situation...

X1->B1->C1
X2->A2->C2
Y1->A1->D1
Y2->B2->D2

It means that all the advantages of twisting go out the window; echo cancellation, noise protection, crosstalk minimisation, etc, etc. DSL will connect over it but won't be happy.

Yes it can affect your DSL, is the short and sweet answer.

Why because those voice channels more than likely won't have a POTs filter on them so whenever the other party starts a voice call it will drop your DSL connection.
 
Yup, I had a crossed line on my telephone line. The noise was so bad that the ADSL connection dropped repeatedly. When I used my handset (yes, a POTS filter was installed) I could hear voices and they could hear me.

Yes, correct. If you're crossed with a non-ADSL voice user you're screwed. Been there, complained about that.
 
Yeah my line has been crossed for a month now anyone know how long telkom takes to fix it?

Spoken to an ex-telkom techie

techie says back in the days they love to swap the lines around to laugh at the people's reactions
