Correct terminology might have eluded me but it detects of you're connecting pc to pc and eliminates the need for a crossover cable.Auto switching???
Sho' 'nuff, all modern hardware *does* do auto MDI/MDIX ..but there are times when having a crossover is just damn handy. But to actually, you know, help .. here you goPeople still need crossovers these daysAll my hardware is auto switching.
Handy why? Because of this?Sho' 'nuff, all modern hardware *does* do auto MDI/MDIX ..but there are times when having a crossover is just damn handy. But to actually, you know, help .. here you go
Thanks for the link though - I was pretty sure that it wasnt a figment of my imagination but its nice to be sureAutomatic MDI/MDI-X capability is specified in the 1000BASE-T standard, so straight-through cables will work in almost all cases. But it is optional, so a crossover cable is needed if neither of the connected devices supports it, or the function has been disabled.
Like I said - all my machines are auto-switching.Handy because of the very specific case of you have your pc, your mate has his ..and nary a switch in sight. But you DO have your crossover cable on hand so you can jack your machines into each other and get that [-]pr0n[/-] .."file transfer" done.
